Cross Platform Migration (BI XI 31-Win to BI 4.1 - Linux)

Former Member

Hi

I would like to know

  1. Will the Update Manager Tool of BI 4.1 running on Linux 64 bit environment migrate the Universes, Users, Groups and other related information from BI XI 3.1 running on Windows (32 bit)?
  2. Will the Report Conversion Tool running on Linux 64 bit environment conversion the Desktop Intelligence reports of BI XI 3.1 running on Windows (32 bit) environment?

If yes, what are the precautions / check list I need to consider before / after the migration

Dear Mr. TRK Prasad

Thanks for the heads-up on the migration between BI XI 3.1 to BI 4.0

However my query pertains to cross platform migration to target BI 4.1 version.

or

Am I missing anything in the link that you shared w.r.t to my query

Please advise

Hello,

when you upgrade the content between two versions with UMT in theory there should not be particular issues even with cross-platform, because the tool upgrades the content only.

Normally the stumbling blocks are differences in DB drivers, if I was the BI admin I would first do a test and upgrade a few universes then check that the DB connectivity works.

I would test both in UDT and IDT, and then creating new documents from those universes.

Remembering that DB drivers for client tools are 32 bits and for server components are normally 64 bits.

And I would keep an extraordinary backup of the source environment in case I need to investigate problems after going live...  see

Thanks

Thanks everyone, who supported me with their insightful guidance.

After migration and conversion, I am facing a different problem with respect to report refresh and formats as posted in this link

Request you help on the above as well

Hello,

JRK stated the Notes that you will need for a succesful Migration.

Just a small Information to add. The RCT (Report Conversion Tool) is not part of the SAP BI Server install. You will need to install the SAP BI Client Tools on a Windows Workstation and from there run the RCT.

A little hint from me, first migrate the whole content 1:1 from XI 3.1 to BI 4.1. Run the conversion directly on the BI 4.1 Host. Enter the BI 4.1 System as Source and Destination System in the RCT.

Hi

Thanks for providing further inputs.

Can I adopt this for cross platform migration from Windows to Linux?

Does Upgrade Manager Tool see that distinction of the OS between the source and target platforms?

Hello,

the Best Practices mentioned by JRK are OS independent. Just follow them.

And if the Question is "Is a Cross OS Migration even possible"?! The Question is yes, it is!
