Sporadic Session Manager problems in Business View Manager

Business View Manager (version 14.1.2.1121)

SAP BO-BI 4.1 (SP02) clients

Software is installed on server running Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise - Service Pack 1 OS

This is a TEST server - and has both the SAP BO-BI 4.1 Platform and Client Tools installed. Problem behavior is the same on different environments with the same set-up, so it is not hardware related.

We are experiencing a sporadic "Session Manager" error when trying to launch the Business View Manager as described below.

1.) Login Screen appears in Business View Manager client, but AUTHENTICATION options are all BLANK in the drop-down, and there is no way to Manually enter them.

2.) Manually entering other values and clicking OK results in the following error -

Internal error: Unable to initialize the session manager.

3.) Close the error.

4.) Close the application and re-launch it.

5.) Repeat steps 1-5 for what appears to be a "random" number of times *(it's a sporadic problem).

6.) "Poof" the problem goes away - and you can login to Business View Manager correctly....but problem may return at any time.

Anyone seen this before - and know what might be causing the "Session Manager" problem...?

Thanks in advance for the advice.

Hi Mark,

I have this exact same issue but mine isn't sporadic.  I have tried over and over to get anything in the Authentication drop down box and nothing ever appears and I always get the error: Internal error: Unable to initialize the session manager if I manually type anything in or leave it blank and hit Connect.

Have you hear on the side perhaps via email or anything a fix for this?

Thank you for any assistance.

Case is still OPEN with SAP Support. It is with "Off-Shore" Support so that's the "Head-meet-Desk" experience it usually is...

Off-Shore suggestions so far have been [1] to uninstall all the versions of the client that have ever been installed on this box, and then only install the most-recent Cumulative clients....but when I asked for details of the un-install steps (*since there are about 4 or 5 versions showing-up in the Windows Control Panel), there was Radio Silence...so nothing was done yet.

Now they seem to be leaning towards [2] a problem with running the Clients on the SAME server that has the PLATFORM software installed....which is CRAZY because that's a pretty common requirement in firewalled environments.

Anyway, It's late, I'm "ranty"....and I would really like SAP to return more of their 1st & 2nd Level Support back to North America or Ireland.

If they figure-out the issue, I will post the answer here.

In the interim, you should open a ticket with SAP Support so that they know that it is happening to other people too. If you message me, I will send you our case number.

Hi Mark,

I found the answer.  I did do an uninstall and all the steps on this following url and after having the dba create a new db and running a fresh install I now see the items in the drop down authentication for Manage servers.

Kallidus Knowledge Base :: How To Remove Business Objects Software from the Server

I hope this helps your case.  I found those registry entires are probably what really fixed it.

Hi,

Open the registry and what is the value on RequestPortLower and RequestPortUpper from HKEY_USER\Software\Classes\VirtualStore\MACHINE\SOFTWARE\SAP BusinessObjects\Suite XI4.x\CER?

Hope this helps,

I don't find the specific-path that you stated in above...but did find it in a couple of different places. My two (2) CER paths are below -

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\SAP BusinessObjects\Suite XI 4.0\CER

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\SAP BusinessObjects\Suite XI 4.0\CER

RequestPortLower = 6433

RequestPortUpper = 6450

I compared this to a different server where the Business View Manager is working correctly, and the setting are the same.

Hi,

Thanks for checking.  I found an old SAP BO KB for the similar symptom and error on 1703930 - XI 3.1 - DeskI & Designer "(IRepoAccess::retrieveAuthModeInfos) Internal error: Unable to initialize the session manager.(hr=#0x8000ffff)". No authentication method available in ImportWizard on http://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/1703930.

The resolution is to

Set the RequestPortLower to 0

Set the RequestPortUpper to 65535 in decimal or FFFF in hexadecimal

If this is still not helping, Guy's resinstall approach may be the last resort.

Hope this helps,

Jin-Chong

We have to set the RequestPort to our fixed value in order to manage some of the .NET SDK traffic through our firewall - so that "wide-open" change is not a viable option.

As mentioned, I compared this to a different 4.1 server where the Business View Manager is working correctly, and the setting are the same.

Going to chase it again with the SUPPORT group - and will post the resolution (if any). Thanks!

Hello,

Here is another update.  After doing the removal steps (shown in the url below:

I reinstalled and did all the steps for AD, I did the migration, and setup ssl.  Everything is working except now I do not have the authentication options when I click on Manage servers.  This is concerning because after getting this all installed and setup the way I want it I cannot manage servers.  How do I fix this.
