Is it necessary to uninstall sap gui 7.2 prior to installing 7.3?

Better you can uninstall the old SAPGUI 7.20 & install the new version SAPGUI 7.30 one along with latest patches

No need, you can install GUI 7.30 directly, the install will check the version of files, and install the higher one.
