notification action box vs tasks

Hi,

Do we need the action box on the right hand side of the notifications ? Cant we do away with the action box and have all the action box actions designed as tasks ? They both seem to do the same thing and that is call some function module behind the scenes to do something.

Thanks

If something to be tracked, then task & follow up action can be used. If nothing to be tracked apart from creating some documents from notification, action box can be used.

Its upto the Consultant & Business requirements.

Dosent selecting an action from the action box create a task at the notification header level ? So I am wondering why do we even need an action box. Just create the action box items as code and then select the codes to post to block stock, log a phone call, create a return delivery.

Action boxes are actually carrying out some thing.  I.e. you can use an action box to perform the task, like for instance "Create Return Delivery" or "Post material to blocked stock".  The action box action goes into the transaction and performs the transaction. In addition, actions can be active or inactive.  I.e you can't do action B until action A is performed.  Actions are not assigned to individual people.

Tasks are usually assigned to a person and have an expected start and end time and date.  You can't track time for the actions.  Tasks can be automatically generated and assigned and can also use workflow.  Actions do not.

These are the main differences that I can think of quickly.

but couldnt I tie up activities like  "Create Return Delivery" or "Post material to blocked stock". and their codes in the task catalog to function modules to do the "action" of  "Create Return Delivery" or "Post material to blocked stock". Why would I need an action box then ? Is it that action box access is given to the coordinator (final dispositioner) of the notification whereas all the other people like purchasing, supply chain, QC, QE, finance, manufacturing act at the task level ?

Hi,

If actions such as "Create Return Delivery" or "Post material to blocked stock" are to be performed in the background instantly, then you do not actually need tasks. Tasks better suit for following duties of third parties, such as other personnel, vendors and customers. If an SAP transaction will be carried out right away by the coordinator, or other activities outside SAP like phone-calls are to be documented, action box may be prefered.

Regards.
