btw: it's time to forget things like SAPNET R/3 Frontend (former OSS = Online Service System) because it will no longer be available as of April 3, 2006! (see also Fadeout information in SAPNET R/3 Frontend)

The SAPNet R/3 Frontend functionalities will be transferred to SAP Solution Manager and SAP Support Portal (accessible via the SAP Service Marketplace: service.sap.com).

Hope this helped.

Jürgen

Jürgen,

I've copy/pasted it as is from a SAP site. Don't recall which one exactly.

Before SAP had launched its web site http://service.sap.com, the only way to download OSS notes etc. was by logging on to an SAP system via a WAN connection enabled by local saprouter. This access using the SAPGUI, is the SAPNET R/3 Front End or OSS.

This is currently still active, but as pointed out earlier, this will be retired in favor of the Service Marketplace web site. This traditionally allows a customer to open messages, search for OSS notes, register keys, systems, open service connection etc.

CSS - was similar to the SAPnet R/3 frontend or OSS, except that it was additional access given to SAP employees and contractors. You could also search other customer's messages for example, logon to to customer systems etc. I believe this has been discontinued.

Another relic from this era was different ftp servers called sapservX in different countries. They could be accessed to download patches etc.

All of these functionalities and much more is now available on Service Marketplace and lately with Solution Manager. E.g now you can download the complete installation software for your customer online. Also instead of paying a telecom company to maintain a T1 line to SAP, you can now setup VPN over internet to SAP, thereby saving that cost.

Hi,

Did some digging and this is what I got back:

SAPNet-R/3 Frontend (today: mySAP Enterprise Resource Planning), formerly Online Service System (OSS), is a medium that enables information flow, communications, and services between SAP customers and SAP. Customers can use the SAPNet-R/3 Frontend to find solutions to system problems, such as Notes, Support Packages, to submit problem messages to SAP, to retrieve information.

CNS: Change Notification Tool.

CSS is to my feeling the simular to OSS and my guess is that SAP tirs to get rid of all these acronyms and call it SAPNet-R/3 Frontend.
