As a business need, I need to figure out if it is possible to open up a field that is not currently available for edit. The field is for service material, not sure if that helps. Please advice and thanks in advice.

SAP has provided the option of defining own screen variants for postings in controlling, but your requirement can't be mapped as Ajay sir rightly said.
