Use of Engineering Record and Lead Change Master.

Hello Gurus,

I would like to know the difference between the Engineering Record and the Lead Change Master it creates in the background. In the Eng.record, all the details are entered ( like objects that requires the change). At a configured status the ER creates a change master which is used to make the changes in the respective objects.

Hence I have to enter all the objects again in the Change master screen so that the respective changes are captured in the system.

I am entering a different ER number and the change master number is different. I use the change master number to capture the changes to the objects. My question is "Why can't I use the ER directly to capture the changes and why is the lead change master required used to make the changes".

Its like duplicating the same steps in Web portal as well in the ECC. Why should I use ER when I do through the change master.

Hope I am not confusing.

These are some questions raised by the clients.

This sounds little basic but any thoughts or inputs would be appreciated.

Thanks & Regards

Jo Pz

Hi JO,

Leading change master is nothing but Change hierarchy. That means you can enable complex changes to several object with respect to several change number.

Example: You have created several change number (Change package) and each change number has several object. And you assign these change number to one change number ie Leading change master.

Validity of each change number is driven from leading change master.

Before you create change package make customizing settings in set control for Release change and before creating change package you need leading change master.

Hi Jo,

"Hence I have to enter all the objects again in the Change master screen so that the respective changes are captured in the system."

Its not required. You have configuration Engineering Record Type --> Change Number Handling at Eng. Record Item --> Object Types wherein you can maintain creation parameter as inherit from header. Objects get automatically assigned to change number.

IMO, There could be various view points to you question why lead change number is required?

I think if you consider a  product or process change which includes lot of objects and different groups, you can consider engineering record as change package under which you can group different changes.

you always have option of using only one - one mapping engineering record and change and not to worry about duplicity in my opinion.

hope this is useful and correct

Hi Maral,

Thank you very much now it makes sense about Engineering Record and a Change Master.

When I try to configure @ Change Number Handling at Eng.Record Item -->Object Types -->Creation Parameter as inherit from header, I get the following message."

Mapping not required for selected creation parameter "

Am I missing any other step

Kindly Advice

Hi Jo,

you are welcome.

Since you are not creating new change # at item level you need not do any parameter mapping.

i.e. dont do any configuration in object type creation parameters.

Please reward points if useful.

Hello Experts,

We have a similar situation. We are not creating new change number at item level.

Do we need to maintain the "Inherit from Header" for all the object types and item statuses?.

For the Item status "Init", I am getting the error for only one object PLM_BOMMAT . Error "You cannot assign this creation parameter to the status of PLM_BOMMAT".

Only the "no change number" options works for PLM_BOMMAT.

For other objects PLM_DIR, PLM_MAT , the inherit from header option works.

For Item status INPR (in process) and CMPL (complete), there are errors for "Inherit from header" option. We are unable to link the ECR to the change number due to these errors. Any thoughts?
