Printing to Epson DFX-9000 Dot Matrix Printer

We are a non-profit that just recently upgraded our 20 year old dot matrix printer to a new Epson DFX-9000 dot matrix printer. We utilize single column Avery 4031 pinfeed labels. We cannot seem to get our Crystal address report to print anywhere close to the rated speed of the printer. We have over 1000 labels to print and it takes approximately 30 seconds for 4 lines of text to print on each label. Does Crystal Reports 2011 (standalone) have the ability to print to a dot matrix printer that allows for the printer to print at a relatively high speed. We have tried using printer resident fonts in the report, but the printer still takes a long time to print each label. All we really want to know is if Crystal Reports 2011 has the ability to print a mailing label report, and, if so, how can we send the print job so the printer can print somewhere close to its rated speed? We have spent over 16 hours trying to troubleshoot this issue and have yet to have a successful outcome. Thanks for any guidance.

Please upload the rpt. Make a copy and change the extension to .txt first.

    hi Paul,

i would recommend upgrading the printer driver from here as crystal is very dependent on this and a lot of issues can stem from not having a later driver.

if that doesn't work, you may also wish to check to see if an avery word template will print from ms word.

    i hope this helps,

      Hi Jamie,

We are using the most recent driver available for the EPSON DFX-9000 from Epson's website. The printer will print at rated speeds when printing a printer test page and out of MS-Word. It is just when we try to print out of the CR preview the printer will print the labels but it takes over 30 seconds to print a single label. I thought that I would add that the original rpt was created in Crystal Reports 8.5 for a Tally dot matrix several years ago. Would there be any benefit to recreating the report in Crystal Reports 2011 with the Epson DFX-9000 set as the default printer? At this point, we do not want to use MS-Word, but if that is our only option then we will go this route. Thanks.

For a dot matrix printer to print fast, it needs to be using a font that is native to that printer. Older versions used to show a little printer next to the font instead of "TT", but not sure if newer versions still do that or not. You should also make sure that printer is set as your default when working on that template.

    • No I do not, unless its related to the font. I'm coming off 6.5 and we have a few reports where we work with Oki 320s, but don't remember ever changing to a different printer model. If both printers had say Courier native and the report was all Courier, I would have expected the report to run fast without any changes.
