instead of using a BEX variable try creating a prompt in the dashboard query editor

Try reloading the query.
Most importantly , the variables used in the Bex query are not taken as prompts in query browser, you need to specifically define the prompts in the Query browser, irrespective of the variables prompts you have in your Bex query.
