Portal Migration to 7.3 or Upgrade

Hi

We are going for an SAP Portal Upgrade from 7.0 to 7.3 but since there is a lot of change that happens in portal from 7.0 to 7.3 the current functionality will have to be modified, so we are thinking of Building a new portal 7.3 system and creating new contents and migrating some old contents in it.

Which would be better practice migrating or Upgrading 7.0 to 7.3

Thanks and Regards

Tushar

    Hi Tushar,

You need to discuss with the developer team regarding the portal upgrade.

After the upgrade, they have important role to play on the systems.

You need to have discussion on the below points

    Points to be remember

    1. Web Dynpro applications of NW 7.0 are source compatible to version 7.3 but not binary compatible and thus need to be manually migrated to the new platform.

This means that the old source code must be imported, re-compiled, and redeployed to the new system. In this scenario , you need to use NWDS which is compatible with SAP Netweaver 7.3

    2. Portal applications developed with Java 1.4.2/J2EE 1.3 which is a default version of SAP NW 7.0 are generally source and binary compatible to those developed with Java EE 5 (JDK 5/6) in SAP NW 7.3 and thus do not need to be manually migrated

However for KMC-API and the UME-API it is necessary to adjust the source code before rebuilding and re-deploying the application.

3.In SAP EP 7.3,PAR files are not used Only EAR and WAR files are used to deploy. So we need to the PAR file to EAR file (Whcih is available in portal itself "Par Migration tool") and it can be deployed in the server

As per SAP, all those WD Java applications that were developed on NW 7.0 needs to be migrated on NW 7.3 if you plan to make further modifications.

    Hello Tushar,

It depends on the customization that you have in your present portal system. if you have lot of customized i views and integration development with third party tools or software on current portal. I recommend you to go for upgrade instead of migrating.

Best option keep an ball on portal developers court and get feedback and then proceed further with upgrade or migration.

    Regards,

      Thanks Rajesh

Would you let me know the things to keep in mind for upgrading 7.0 to 7.3

When to involve the functional guys, there would not be any SPAU or SPDD here, what happens at those steps during upgrade

      Thanks and Regards

We recently did came across this dilemma in our portal systems and we ended up upgrading most of them but we also migrated one. As Rajesh said, the decision making point would be how much development you have in place and the technology behind it.

if you can afford it, the best way to proceed here would be to make a copy of your system to a small test/sandbox host, upgrade it and give it to your portal development team to analyze, portal system is quick to upgrade so it should not be too much of a work. They should be able to analyze what is working and what needs to be fixed. Based on the rework required, it will be easy for you to take a decision. But if you have lot of custom development, you would most like have to upgrade.

Your portal team should be aware of all the options implemented for your business scenarios. What kind of functionalities are allowed via portal, do you have business packages as portal-addons. if yes then all functional teams related to that would need to test. all portal roles and I-views should also be tested.

    Hello

The question about whether to migrate contents from the old EP to a newly installed Netweaver 7.3 EP is to be discussed internally in your organisation with the developers.

The plan to move to the newer release of portal should be done with minimum business impact.

From the technical point of view you should first check whether the system has a compatible OS and DB for the NW 7.30 upgrade.

As there is no indication to the OS and DB I cannot be specific here.

I suggest you to check PAM for that - http://service.sap.com/pam

Secondly read the upgrade guide for the NW 7.3 upgrade based on the OS and DB for Java stack.

SPDD and SPAU are done on ABAP based systems.
