Standard universes on BI contents

Hi there,

The way we have standard BI contents in BW, do we also have standard universes on BI content?

We have standard universes and reports for Rapid Marts. Likewise, is it the same case with BW?

Any information on standard universes would highly be appreciated!

Regards,

Tejas

    HI Tejas,

As my understanding no standard universe and rapid marts, create custom universe.

better create the BEx queries with all calculations and create BICS connection in IDT tool and create webi or dash boards.

how to create the bics connection

    http://scn.sap.com/docs/DOC-48189

    Thanks,

    Phani.

      Hi Tejas,

I would like to add the following concerning the performance:

You can build BICS connection in 3 ways:

      1-BICS to your BW system

2-BICS to a cube (this connection allows you to connect to all queries

      on this cube)

3-BICS to a query (so you will have to create a connection for every

      query)

So depending on your security preferences you should decide which type

      suites you the best?

Those are the advantages of each type of connection (sorted from best performance to worst one):

1- BICS to your BW system: It avoids consistent maintenance

2- BICS to a cube: Used If you want users to access specific cubes. It

is easier to maintain and control then BICS to a query.

3- BICS to a query: Used If you want users to access specific queries.

It is more organized for users than the other ways but is less easy to

      maintain an control.

Notice that creating one OLAP connection/Bex query doesn't automatically

mean that there will be a bad performance in connectivity especially in

      case of concurrent access.

Especially, In BI4.1 this behavior is well studied and improved.

Same OLAP connection for several Webi - user-exit variables error

I hope that this is helpful for you and give you more idea avout connection to BW.

      Cordially,

      Wafa

    Hi Tejas,

Looks like you are coming from SAP BW background. If you are, Then let tell that theres no standard content [Universes] available in SAP BI 4.0.

If your source is BEx query, build the BICS Connection in CMC of BI.

If your requirement is based on multiple sources [SAP and Non-SAP] then you need to create multi source connection in IDT of BI, Create Data Foundation and Business Layer in IDT. From WebI/Crystal Reports for Enterprise you can access the Universes.

For knowing more on SAP BW-BI Integration aspects , please go through the Ingo Hilgefort's Integrating SAP BusinessObjects BI with SAP NetWeaver 3rd edition

And also read Performance Optimising SAP Business Objects Reports based upon SAP BW Using BICS Connectivity document by Kurt Holst

    Hi Tejas,

To add further, theres no need to create Universe on top of BEx Query, you can directly create webi report on top of BEx Query.

      Thanks your suggestions Rajeev.

I am from BI background and have requirement where we are going to use BW.

Just wanted to confirm if there are any standard universes for BI content like we have for Rapid Marts.

So what I understand from above responses that there is no way to have standard universes except creating them manually.

      Regards,

      Tejas
