Need Clarify on SAP PU 12 interface

Hi,

I am in SAP PI background ,but in my current project they are asking me to work on PU 12 interface tool,

coming from a technical background is it suggestible to work on this tool,or de we need to have a

SAP HR knowledge on it.i am getting confused .
