Hi,

SAP offers MM route (351 movement) as well as SD route (641 movement) for STO. The selection of the process depends on the actual physical location of the involved plants.

Suppose you have two plants which are in same physical location, but in SAP they are mapped as different plants due to organizational measures. In this case, you wont require any documents for transportation. Normally, during these kind of situations, you can suggest 351 movement.

Now, suppose your two plants are physically located far away and you need to transfer the goods through a transporter and boarder / check posts / public roads etc, you may need all the documents required for the physical movement. In these situations we prefer the SD route, that is via 641 movement.

Hi,

The movement type 641 can be used with intracompany  STO only.

351 movement can be used for inter company as well as intra company STO.

If you are using document type UB (item cat U) for intercompany STO , you can use the MM route (without delivery and billing) with movement type 351, with company code clearing accounts in OBYA.

For intercomapny process, If You are using document type NB then it is only possible with SD route (with delivery and billing) with 643 movement (or 645).

Normally, intercompany process will be followed with SD route only and intra company with or without SD route.

For intercomapny process, you may refer the doc

Refer the help document for details with movement type and characteristics in each cases:Stock Transfer Using Stock Transport Order (SAP Library - Managing Special Stocks (MM-IM))

Hope its clear.
