Linked universes in Universe Designer

Is it possible to add to an already created universe a table coming from excel? I was thinking to create a universe pointing to excel and then to link this new universe with the existing one. What do you think? The existing universe points to an Oracle database.

In what directory should we put the excel?

We use 3.1 version and unfortunately we don't have the Rich Client activated. It would have been much more easier with Rich Client.

If you don't have access on rich client then instead of linked universe, load excel file in the database under the same schema. After that you can use the table in the same universe.

These are some things to remember with Linked universe.

Things to remember for Linked universes

  • Linking universes must use the same data account/database and same RDBMS.
    • Using the same connection for both universes makes managing the universes easier, but this can be changed at any time.
    • Core and Derived universes must be in same repository.
    • Core universe must be exported and re-imported at least once.
    • Derived universe does not need to have been exported before creating a link.
    • Only the table schema, classes and objects of the core universe are available in the derived universe. Contexts must be re-detected in the derived universe.
    • Exported derived universes are located in the same universe domain as the core universe.
    • You are authorized to link the given universe.

Thanks Amit. Unfortunately, for us, it's more cost effective to see if we can inject the data directly in the universe than in the database. I know it's not too clean but this is the situation...

Come to think about it, I think the best solution would be to create a new universe that points to the excel and then to merge data at report level instead of linking the two universes. What do you think?

Better solution is to to use excel direct in the webi report via rich client.but as you don't have access create universe on top of excel and merge the data provider in webi level.

Yes, I'm going to create universe on top of excel. Is there a specific folder where the excel should be?

No specific folder in BO server.

Hi, Would it be possible to post my question on "SAP BusinessObjects BI Platform Community"? I was trying to do this at first but haven't succeeded. Thank you in advance
