Ask her best friend. ^^ Maybe this will get you some clues.

Somehow all the excellent suggestions from Steffi, Jelena, etc, from last year never seem to filter down to me in time. I find myself often in the same situation as you, Julius, and Andy, in suddenly scrambling about a day or two before Christmas (or her birthday), and all those little (often not so subtle) hints dropped through the year suddenly go poof! Gone. Blank. No idea what she told me anymore. Panic sets in. I become convinced I'm the worst husband ever. Hmm, how many hundreds of dollars will it cost for pre-wrapped emergency overnight delivery from Amazon...?
For a while I knew what it feels like for freshers with an interview the next day, when they write "Give me the step-by-step procedure asap"...
But I was blessed this afternoon when I intercepted a christmas basket brought by someone who's name I will not mention. Biscuits. Nuts. Chocolates. Wine. Tea... Perfect gift, and it now has a "with love from Julius" card on it 😉
Survived another year..
Julius
I hope it is OK for me to hijack this thread and ask for ideas about an Xmas present for the missus this year?
She wanted 2 new sofas, so we (what I thought was romantic) made a deal that I 1 for her and she buys the other 1 for me. That worked fine and I even went to IKEA with her for 2 hours to look at matching other things. I even went with to Interio Designer but got into trouble for falling asleep on the psychologist couch.
Now via my sister I heard that the missus has concerns about the sofas. There is actually nothing wrong with them except that they can only be delivered in February 2014... so the problem is that she wants to be able to open a present on Xmas eve anyway and be delighted.
Does anyone have an original idea for an Xmas present for the missus which excludes that which she already wanted, the sister won't use it as "abuse report" that her husband did not think of it for her either and she is still delighted.
I was thinking about creating an SCN account for her and giving her 10k SCN points from mine. Or all of them, forever... but I guess that JIVE does not support that. Dumb idea anyway as it will not be well received.
Another option I thought of was a very nice silk sari. Will give her hope for the return of the summer. Does anyone know of a good source for such a thing if I send the spec?
Other Xmas present ideas for the missus are also very welcome. Any ideas are generally welcome as they might also help other people who are in a fix which I managed to avoid in past years.
Cheers,
Julius

Ha-ha! Well, at least the SCN account is not a fry pan, so no chance of geting hurt by it being thrown back at you.
As a female, I can tell that a gift of clothes, cosmetics, accessories and such could go either very well or very, very bad.
Personally, every year I hope someone would give me a Panera Bread gift card (no luck so far, maybe my husband should get an SCN account, er? ). It's not that I can't afford it or it's difficult to come by. But for some reason I enjoy that place immensely, so for someone to get such gift for me would mean (a) they know me very well; (b) they want me to enjoy more of those special moments when you walk in through the door and smell fresh baked bagels. (Darn, now I'll have to go there tomorrow!)
So maybe there is something similar that your wife enjoys. Surely you must know at least some things about her.
Julius,
be my guest, I am also a sufferer of this condition.
This year, apart from a number of smaller gifts our christmas present is to go to London for Valentine's weekend and watch Les Miserables.
I don't think we'd go for sofa's as christmas presents, our chimney's not big enough for Father Christmas to get them down, and if he got stuck in there on the way we'd have hell to pay as we wouldn't be able to run the fire in the morning and that would be really unpleasant.
I think Christmas presents for wives would be a good subject for Marilyn's fail fest because man oh man, I have failed miserably by getting the wrong christmas present in the past. What a challenge this is.
We'll have to take private counsel from Jelena and figure this out as a group therapy thing.
Good luck,
Andy.

Yep. I prefer to buy this stuff myself OR have the exact item I want on a shopping list, so that the others get the right one. ^^ Gift cards always look a bit impersonal to me, so when I give away those, I tend to craft something, that relates to that.
Julius,
I am just back in the office after the holidays and saw your query. I didn't see this suggestion in any of the replies, so for your consideration for next year's gifting to your wife, I recommend something my husband has been buying me for some years now: a day of pampering at a favorite spa. No worries about the size or color, all she has to do is schedule it, show up and enjoy.
Cheers,
Gretchen
I personally prefer The Grinch and Ebenezer Scrooge, especially as it hits me twice every year, nevertheless Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from me too.
