How many update (V1 and V2) processes per app. instance should be configured?

Hello colleges,

We have SAP BW system (NW7.3). Hardware platform - AIX. RAM per application instance - 16 GB.

We have some questions related to performance system guidance.

1) How many update (V1 and V2) processes per app. instance should be configured?

2) Can we set up some V1 and V2 processes on different app. instances or on primary app. instance only? Or are there any restrictions?

3) Are there the rules of thumb for BI/BW sizing on that point?

Thank you very much.

Hello Igor,

about the number of the V1 update processes the note:

561880 - Requests hang because IDocs are not processed

states: " 2 UPD process are sufficient in BW "

For the V2 update processes

if you do not set up V2 update processes in the complete system the V1 update processes will process the V2 update requests if required.

See the online help at:

V1 and V2 Update Function Modules - Updates in the SAP System (BC-CST-UP) - SAP Library

I hope this helps.

Hi, colleges.

Thank you very much for your extremely useful answers. It's more clear.

As i understand all you it does not matter in what instance primary or dialog instance i set up V1 and V2 processes. It is important to define their sufficient quantities for the system.

And for BW 7.x there are no serious restrictions on that point.

Hello,

yes, basically there must be at least one update process somewhere in the system; and the note

39412 gives a specific recommendation for BW systems.

Hi

On BW system you do not need to setup V2 update process (they are only needed for low priority updates, these update are the ones used for asynchronous update of SIS, LIS and other data sources that are created for BW - and not used in a BW system).

You can setup update process on any instance but they are more efficient when running on the same host has the DB.

There are not that much of asynchronous updates on a BW system so 1 process should be enough.

You can then check the queue info in SM51 (/goto/server name/information/queue information)

Best regards

Hi Igor,

Check following sap notes

1) sap note 39412 for how many work processes should be configured

2) sap note 108999 for how many spool work process of each instant

3) sap note 9942 for Maximum number of Work processes
