Hi All,
We are planning to upgrade the content form XIR3.1 to BO4 SP4.
We are planning to go for Incremental approach.
We have around 1000 Objects and 100 users. WebI reports and Universes.
I have some queries before we start the process:
1)Do i go for "Live to Live" or "BIAR to Live" if using incremental approach?
2) When I start upgrade with UMT do I have to stop the all the services (excecpt CMS,FTP,Tomcat) as I was reading the document for UMT and it says I have to stop all the services.
3) If answer to above question is Yes then do I stop the services in both systems i.e XIR3.1 and BO4.0 untill upgrade process is done?
4) Can I upgrade without stoping services, and just make that folder unavailable for the time untill upgrade is done?
5) I have amny WebI reports with "CUSTOM SQL", are there any major issues with upgrading of WebI reports with "Custome SQl"?
Please let me know your inputs so that I can finalize the process and approach based on live experiences!!
Thanks,
Nisha

1)Do i go for "Live to Live" or "BIAR to Live" if using incremental approach?
This a tough question and purely depends on your approach to be followed. It would be easier to use Live-Live to ensure a clean upgrade and moving all dependency objects.
2) When I start upgrade with UMT do I have to stop the all the services (excecpt CMS,FTP,Tomcat) as I was reading the document for UMT and it says I have to stop all the services.
You need to stop all BO services, except CMS / IFRS / OFRS. Tomcat, FTP is ideally not required as far as I can recollect as these are not co-related with BO.
3) If answer to above question is Yes then do I stop the services in both systems i.e XIR3.1 and BO4.0 untill upgrade process is done?
You need to stop the services at BI 4.0 and not at 3.1. The purpose of stopping all the services at BI4 is to provide the UMT tool maximum memory possible for better performance of the tool.
4) Can I upgrade without stoping services, and just make that folder unavailable for the time untill upgrade is done?
This question is not clear enough. What folder are we talking of here. Ideally I would still suggest you to stop all the servers while performing the upgrade.
5) I have amny WebI reports with "CUSTOM SQL", are there any major issues with upgrading of WebI reports with "Custome SQl"?
There can be issues with webi reports created on Custom SQLs which can be only identified after the upgrade. As recommended take necessary backups prior to upgrade.
In addition to all this I would definitely suggest you to run the reposcan tool on 3.1 for ensure that all dependencies are in sync and we have a clean system at 3.1
Thanks Arvind for reply!!
If I choose incremental approach for upgrade, then
In your reply to the Question no. 3, as you mentioned "You need to stop the services at BI 4.0 and not at 3.1." Then How do I make sure the consisitancy i.e no user is using any of those folders/reports which are being upgraded?
Thanks,
Nisha
You can do few things to avoid that usage during the up-gradation.
1) Inform the Users not use during that time.
2) Remove the security on that particular folder which you are trying to upgrade.( in incremental Upgradae). Security will not be migrated during this process.
Best way is to inform the users to not use the reports during the up-gradation.
I guess I have not been clear enough to answer your questions.
The reason why I mentioned that 3.1 services are that they are not necessary to be stopped, as the entire activity is being performed by BI4 CMS service. (Stopping service at 3.1 is kind of optional).
Again for a live-live incremental / full upgrade a system downtime would definitely be suggested.
Hope I have helped in clearing your doubts and answered your original queries.
