Unable to sort or add calculation when using BW query with characteristic structure

Dear All,

We are using a BW query (OLAP connection) with characteristic structure   in Analysis for Excel. The problem is the I can't do sorting on key figures values and if I want to add custom calculation then it throws an error. For example if I want to subtract Actual-Month from Budget-Month then it give "Formula (1) contains a formal error (BRAIN-209)" error. Please see attached.

SAP Note 1671259 explains about above error message but none of my calculation has got any time or date operator.

I can do the same with BW queries which do not have characteristic structure. Is this a limitation from BW or something that Analysis for Excel is missing?

Any help will be really appreciated.

Could you check your BW back and and see if the notes mentioned in OSS note 1613857 might apply?

While you don't have a date/time operator, sometimes applying the notes/fixes may help fix the problem.  It is a local formula.

I have confirmed and so we already have those notes/fixes applied to BW system.

I believe I will have to log a ticket with SAP.

Hi Angad,

If you have a structure in your Bex query then you are not able to do any sorting on key figures. Structures put a fixed view in place and it can;t be changed at all.

I have the same issue as Angad. I can accept that sorting based on key figures is not working when the Query contains a structure. But why do calculations fail? Do you have an answer for this as well?

Hi Jonas,

For an update, this is also happening when we are using SAP HANA information view. So I am going to log a incident with SAP Support.
