HANA Data Load and Reporting

Former Member

I am new to this area so looking for some information from folks who have implemented HANA in their company.

1. When you connect SAP HANA to R3 system. Do you load entire SAP R3 Database into SAP HANA or load selective Tables/ Data.

2. How is frequently data is loaded in Hana so that one can say "REAL TIME DATA". Do we run jobs to keep loading data every minute . Hows is this process of data load  done .

3. Reporting. Do we report directly on hana database or use BO as front end tool to run report out of Hana . What is the SAP recommendation when its come to reporting.  Should we install SAP BW on Hana and then use BO to report or Directly load Data in Hana and run reports.

4. Does Hana Appliance are good enough to provide standard reporting needs.

Would appreciate if members can provide information on what they have seen or implemented

Thanks

Hi Andy,

1. When you connect SAP HANA to R3 system. Do you load entire SAP R3 Database into SAP HANA or load selective Tables/ Data.

It depends on your scenario, If you are going to use Business Suite on HANA, then all your data will be on HANA otherwise if you are using HANA as a Secondary database then only some of R3 data will be loaded to HANA.

Learn more about Suite on HANA:

http://www.saphana.com/docs/DOC-2945

http://www.saphana.com/docs/DOC-3671

2. How is frequently data is loaded in Hana so that one can say "REAL TIME DATA". Do we run jobs to keep loading data every minute . Hows is this process of data load  done .

When you use SLT then data can be loaded in Real Time to HANA. In SLT there is a concept of logging tables and a master job that controls everything. As Durga told above its a trigger based approach, as soon as data is entered in Application table in ECC a trigger is created and data is loaded to HANA

Check this starter blog to know more about SLT:

3. Reporting. Do we report directly on hana database or use BO as front end tool to run report out of Hana . What is the SAP recommendation when its come to reporting.  Should we install SAP BW on Hana and then use BO to report or Directly load Data in Hana and run reports.

You can use BO or other reporting tools like Microstrategy, Excel etc to report on top of HANA.

There is no need to install BW as reporting directly on HANA is very fast.

4. Does Hana Appliance are good enough to provide standard reporting needs.

HANA is a database so for reporting you will have to use reporting tools like BO etc.

Vivek

Hi Andy,

For 3rd question: Currently reporting on SAP HANA database supports only BO and Excel.

Sakshi ,

SAP Lumira, SAP business  objects analysis, (SAP visual intelligence is now SAP Lumira),Webi,Dashboard Designer & Crystal reports you can use these reporting tools  to perform reporting on SAPHANA database

SAP business objects data services & SAP LT Replication server can be used for Data Provisioning. Where from the source you can feed data in to HANA..

Always post a new Question.

1. When you connect SAP HANA to R3 system. Do you load entire SAP R3 Database into SAP HANA or load selective Tables/ Data.

I am yet to see any company that I have worked with dumping entire ECC in HANA for analytical usage ; its not a recommend practice also as HANA memory is rather expensive. The normal practice is selective loading both selective master data table (with full data load) and transaction table with selective load  (example last 1 years transaction)

2. How is frequently data is loaded in Hana so that one can say "REAL TIME DATA". Do we run jobs to keep loading data every minute . Hows is this process of data load  done .

If you are refering to SLT for real time data load ; then it is a trigger based load and not a job based on a interval type load. I will suggest to search for the data provisioning option in to learn more on this topic as there are quite a bunch of nice document already available

3. Reporting. Do we report directly on hana database or use BO as front end tool to run report out of Hana . What is the SAP recommendation when its come to reporting.  Should we install SAP BW on Hana and then use BO to report or Directly load Data in Hana and run reports.

HANA is mostly used as a database and BO is the recommended tool for any type of report.. (unless you want to build a custom application for reporting on HANA ). You do not have to install BW for reporting as you can directly on HANA using BO. BW is recommend mainly for standard SAP content that comes with it.

4. Does Hana Appliance are good enough to provide standard reporting needs.

To reiterate which I mentioned already HANA appliance does not come with any reporting tool or reporting features built in. HANA is mostly used as a database layer with reporting layer (BO) running on top of it as reporting.

Hope this clears your doubts..
