Hi gurus - I have a long chain of questions.. (possibly dumb ones. But please clariy for me..

q1.

I am trying to set-up a bw sandbox. The basis team says they have established all the RFCs for bw and r/3 and settings for the flat-files from pc too. I want to know what are the steps I should be following in bw for making it possible to to extract data from flat files and r/3.

This is a fresh install so we don't have the luxury of having a production copy data for this.

What's the step-by-step procedure to set up extraction for SD,FI & MM.

(In BW data sources, what is the difference between

SAP APPLICATION COMPONENTS & SAP R/3 APPLICATION COMPONENTS.. (some fields show up in more than one node)

q2.

I am trying to load an object Zdistr_chan from 0distr_chan(from r/3). I have created an direct update infosource

and tried to assign a r/3 datasource. It listed out all the available datasources but 0distr_chan wasn't found ?

How should I proceed ?

q3.

What is the significance of a '+'/'-'/'Mark' mark against a datasource.

q4.

I find master attr in more than one place. Where and how should I check if this datasource has been assigned to another

user ?

0material_attr:

\SAP\Application Components\Application Components\Logistics\Master data Logistics in general

\SAP\SAP Application Components\Logistics - General\Logistics Master Data

what is the difference between the above two ?

q5.

If I make an inofobject as an infoprovider will I be able to make it again as an infoobject ?

q6.

I have created a infoobject IOMAT with no attributes (with medium text). I am trying to load it with r/3 data. I have created the infosource and while trying to assign the datasource (attr & text), there is a message:

ConvExits for assigned InfoObjects inconsistent

ALPHA (KS) - MATN1(TS)

Where can I look for conversion exits and the explanation of the error ?

In transfer rules, how do I specify if it's a direct transfer without any modifications of if it's not direct transfer requiring more manipulation.

q7.

I am trying to assign a r/3 datasource for an object I have created (IOMAT with content attributes 0matl_cat,0matl_type & 0Division) and medium text.

When I give the two datasources 0material_attr & text,

everything goes fine for 0material_attr. But for 0material_text, there is an error message "Error when writing routines"

Is there something I am missing.

Please let me know how should I go about it.

Thanks.

Hi,

1.http://help.sap.com/bp_biv135/BBLibrary/documentation/B84_BB_ConfigGuide_EN_DE.doc

2.for getiing displayed the R/3 data sources, goto the particular source system right click then select replicate.. Once u assigned a data source to the Infosource then it will not be seen in the available datasource list.. If u want remove the assignment goto the infosource maintenance screen menu Infosource->remove source system assignment...

4.Go to where used list in the under business content pushbutton select ur data source it will display the details..

Or Go to the metadta repository select ur data source it will display in a graphical format...

6.Flag check box lower case letters in general tab of IOMAT and select the conversion routine ALPHA..

Click on the infoobject icon in transfer rules u will get a pop up there the first option fields r copied from TS & not modified..

Hi Siddhu - Thanks for the info. It was very valuable. But still I am not able to navigate to the infosourec maint screen. When I go to the infosources and go to the

infosource I am looking for and click the context, it gives me only the option to assign a data source or generate export datasource but does not have any entry to remove the assignment. Please let me know the navigating part.

Thanks a lot..

Hi Abhi,

To get to InfoSource maintenance, just double click the InfoSource. To assign another source system, you can just right click and choose Assign DataSource. It will first ask you to assign the Source system. To delete the datasource assignment you need to click the Trash Bin icon (3rd from left).

Hope this helps...

Thank you very much. Very very helpful.

When you load master data from a flatfile, where do you specify (in the data file), the "language dependent" characters such as "E" for English etc ?

Is it true that some of the characteristic Infoobjects

just have texts but no master data ? If that's the case,

where does the key come from ? If I take 0distr_chan infoobject, it has only text component. where does the

"distr channel" column come from.

Thank you.

When you load master data from a flatfile, where do you specify (in the data file), the "language dependent" characters such as "E" for English etc ?

      • You can maintain it as a column in your flat file. The placement of this cou=lumn depends upon the sequence of fields in your data source.

Is it true that some of the characteristic Infoobjects

just have texts but no master data ? If that's the case,

where does the key come from ? If I take 0distr_chan infoobject, it has only text component. where does the

      • The value for Distribution Channel will come from what is loaded as Distr. Channel during the transactional data load. The Key will also be a part of the text load. Text cannot be loaded without the key on each record being loaded.

Hope this helps...

Hi abhi,

While loading from flat file we have the language field column which is populated on every data record which is mapped to 0LANGU in the transfer rules..

Yes..There are characteristic InfoObjects that have only text ..

Mostly these objects are indicators or codes and only require text for them..

In the load you would have the Distr Channel and the corresponding language and text for it ...

So the key always remains..by no master data we mean that there are no attributes to it..

Ashish..

Thanks to you all friends. I believe I can count on you any time.

And one last question for this topic..

Where and When do we use control files instead of data files ?

Thanks.

Q7: I get the impression that you added 'short description' as an attribute to your master data. Is that correct? This is not needed since the needed table for masterdata text is automatically generated.

Hi - Thank you all for your time.

So, when a datasource has already been assigned to a infosource, we just need to replicate it in bw.

So, if 10 users are using the same datasource (0material_attr), would they be replicating it as many times ?

Are there infoobjects that have only texts ? Is there way to identify them ?

Thanks.

Hi Abhi,

You just need to replicate the DS once when it is new and is brought into BW the first time, and then if any chnages are made to the DS it needs to be replicated again.

Hope this helps...

Hi - There was an observation from Maik at teh beginning of the topic given below..

*****

2. Probably, the datasource 0DISTR_CHAN_ATTR was assigned to infoobject 0DISTR_CHAN. You will have to release this assignment.

So, if a datasource has been assigned to a infosource for one user, I should still see it under the available datasources, right ? But I don't see my datasource.

Please let me know how I should proceed.

Thank you.

Q6: Conversion routines are specified in the infoobject.

ALPHA conversion means that numbers will be left-filled with '0' and characters will be right filled with spaces.

MATN1 conversion is specifically for material id's.

There is a white paper about the conversion routines in www.service.sap.com/bi -> media library -> howto.

Q5: No. An infoobject can ALSO be an infoprovider. But it still remains an infoobject.

Q4: An infoobject can occur in several infoobject-catalogs. Don't worry, there is only one infoobject 0MATERIAL. All references point to the same infoobject.

1. If the source systems were installed, you have to replicate the datasources (for SAP sourcesystems). Flat-file datasources have to be created manually in BW

2. Probably, the datasource 0DISTR_CHAN_ATTR was assigned to infoobject 0DISTR_CHAN. You will have to release this assignment.

3. What do you mean exactly???

4. There is no difference. Infoobjects can be assigned to more than one infoarea

5. An inofobjects remains being an infoobject. The definition as dataprovider just enables you to create queries against the infoobject and to use it in multiproviders

6. Inconsistent conversion rules have (usually) no effect, if the source system was a SAP system. You can resolve it by changing the conversion rule for your target infoobject in infoobject definition.

The mapping method in transfer rules is displayed by the icon between source and target infoobject.

7. Check the mapping, if it's correct, leave the administration of the infosource, reopen it and activate again for the text datasource assignment.

Hi Maik - Thanks for the helpful notes.

Q2. What is the procedure to release the assignment for datasources ?

Q3. When you are in the admin screen for datasources, you see the following signs against each of the datasources.

Distribution Channel '+' or '-' 0DISTR_CHAN_ATTR

What do '+' or '-' signify ?

Where can I get trancodes and their related infomation ?

Thanks.

Hi Abhi,

Q3. It refers to whether a datasource ha sbeen assigned to an InfoSource or not. If + then yes, if - then the assignment has not been done.

What T-codes are you looking for?

Hi - Thanks for your time.

When a datasource is assigned, are there any restrictions for it to be released ? How to release the asssignment ?

I am looking for a repository of the tcodes. I don't know if one is available anywhere.

When activating the business content, there is a message on the message bar that "1000 objects collected in 20 levels". What are these levels ?

When uploading master data from flat files, we do it in two separate files (one for master data, one for text) ? Is this always the case or can we do it in one file ? can we declare Material name as an attribute ? and load it at once ?

What'd the difference between v2 updates and v3 updates ?

Is it just release related ? or is there more to it ?

Thank you.

T-Codes: In SE16 look at table TSTCT.

What exactly do you mena by release: Are you talkign about transporting the datasource-infosource assignment? If yes, then you just need to make sure that the data source has been replicated in the target system.

The level you can see when you open up the collected objects hierarchy: Like InfoArea > Cube > Update Rules > InfoObjects > Attributes etc...

You can have common or separate files. I prefer to keep them separate. The name be loaded as an attr.

Hope this helps...
