Hello,
I am trying to figure out whether SAP supports NW based applications on windows server 2012 R2
Checked note 0001732161 :
as per the note Windows 2012 andWindows 2012 R2 have different PAM entries, bit I dont see any PAM entreis fro 2012 R2
Also dont see this listed in note 1580509
Regards
Arun
It's pretty clear that most of your respondents aren't realizing that you are asking specifically about Windows Server 2012 R2, which is not the same OS as Windows Server 2012. I've been looking for the same information. Per the Note you referenced (1732161), SAP products in general are not yet released for productive use on R2. 2012 R2 will have its own PAM entries, separate from 2012, but only once SAP is released productively for use on that OS.
There should be more information specific to running SAP on 2012 R2 in Note 1922495, but as of today that Note is not released, so I'm not able to see what it says.
The implication, to me, is that you can run a non-production SAP system on 2012 R2, with some risk perhaps, if you use the latest 7.20_EXT or 7.21_EXT kernel, but you cannot migrate your production systems to R2 just yet. I expect that support will be coming soon, however.
I don't know if R2 will have higher kernel or BASIS support pack level requirements than 2012 does, but I expect that will be the case, at least at the kernel level.
Best regards,
Matt

The PAM has been updated, and Windows Server 2012 R2 is now shown as supported for the core NetWeaver ABAP products, at least, using kernel 7.41_EXT (not 7.40). Also, I am now running an SRM 7.13 sandbox system on R2 using the 7.40 kernel (I'll update it to 7.41 shortly) successfully.
I don't have any direct experience with Business One, but the PAM does not show that R2 is supported for 8.82, but it may be coming. I don't see support listed yet for 9.0 either.
I should point out that, for MS SQL Server customers (which I think includes all Business One customers?), Windows 2012 is only supported with SQL Server 2012, not SQL 2008 or lower.
Also, Note 1922495 is now released, and it basically says that you must use kernel versions 7.21 or 7.41. Note 1732161 furthermore says that for R2 you must use the EXT version of the kernel (721_EXT or 741_EXT).

I updated my kernel from 7.40 to 7.41 and it made a big difference. Previously, I was getting very bad disk I/O performance, and I was making lots of complaints to the data center team about SAN and VMware I/O and so forth, and they were scratching their heads. I replaced the kernel with the officially supported 7.41 and those I/O problems simply disappeared. So, I guess the GetVersionEx issue isn't the only problem that Windows 2012 R2 introduced that is solved with the 7.41 kernel (or 7.21, presumably).
Matt,
GetVersionEx() was the only Windows Server 2012 R2 specific fix in the newer kernel versions.
This fix was provided to both kernel versions.
Maybe the root cause for your performance problem was a different one: there was a non paged pool memory leak in the kernel which has been fixed in one of the late december patches - again in both code lines (7.40 and 7.41).
best regards
Peter
As a further follow-up, my performance problems turned out, as Peter indicated was likely, to have nothing to do with the kernel. It turned out to be the EU_INIT job consuming much of the available resources and having a very long runtime (on the order of a few weeks!). It turned out that restarting the system (such as a kernel update would require) stopped the job, and thus the system would perform well again. However, EU_INIT is such that, if terminated prematurely, it automatically reschedules itself for 8pm the next day, at which point it picks up where it left off (meaning, you can cancel the job during business hours, if it's a problem, without losing the work it has done).
Eventually the job finished to completion and it's not an issue any longer.
Oddest thing. The PAM seems to have been updated again, and now Windows Server 2012 R2 is no longer listed as supported (yet). I wonder if this is in conjunction with the opening of the FCS (First Customer Ship) program for R2? I am certain that I did see this listed as supported in the PAM back in early January, when I wrote my previous comments, but it's definitely not there now, and all the information seems to indicate that general availability will be the beginning of Q2... i.e., in about a month from now.
Peter, do you have any insights you can share with us about this?
Hello,
Do you read the message that I posted at 11 February?! I put there an important information about this subject.
Please check the following information about the Windows Server 2012 (R2) and also the sap note:

Assuming that you want to install an ECC system then here it is.

The information about operating system version support is available in the PAM.
OS Versions are always released in conjunction with the database platform.
Therefore you have to look in the database platforms TAB of the release information:
Example Netweaver 7.0, Application Server ABAP

Thanks for your response
As indicated I had already checked the PAM and didn't see 2012R2 , but there is this OSS note
