PPDS implementation-possible pitfalls in Process Industry

Hi,

I am recent crossover from manufacturing to APO and have been assigned the task of collecting some "useful" info on PPDS implementations in process industries (other than configuration that we will figure out anyway).

Process industry here means something is refined. stored, mixed with something else from somewhere else, aged and finally the edible liquids are filled in lines that pack 100's of SKU's on almost 24x 7 basis at multiple locations across the globe. complex supply network. All kind of source determination possibilities exist. e.g. Flavors are sometimes flown from Denmark to Asia and we also pack for some other companies when there is spare capacity.

While I am doing my homework and reading and talking to some experts who have been there done that, I wish to know what are some of the key pain areas that USERS (production schedulers) express after the implementation of PP and DS ?. Are there any productive third party tools available to make interactive planning easier vis a vis what is there in standard

At this point I am only expecting some clues on thinking about some solution options so that we implement a solution that doesn't scare the users who are already struggling with a decade old in house developed system that is being scrapped for reasons of no support and maintenance.

Alternatively some public links to case studies will be helpful

Thanks

I thought this was an experts forum!. I was diverted to this place from IT tool box.com that I have been using since my first job and learnt about this only recently.

    I am rephrasing my questions

What are the top 5 possible reasons that make planners revert from PP & DS to Excel based PP & DS in a productive systems ?

What are the pains cited in interaction with PP&DS in the users own language ?

What are the tradeoffs involved in design of PP&DS ?

Don't bother business requirements now. Examples appreciated.

    Thanks

Bang on. Thanks Mike. I love these kind of humane discussions beyond settings and configuration. I am here to make lives easy for users. That's my only purpose of existence. So I was inclined to think of cool tools from someone who has been there done that. The risk here is details cloud the mind, esp. the ones developed normally :-)

In general, a system is only as complex as it needs to be.

Absolutely. My intention is to make the end use intuitive using a combination of design and training. I was only thinking on how to do this creatively and scientifically while still meeting the end objective that is most often the customer service level I am obliged to maintain.

I will post more questions later

      Thanks
