Defining Roles



Our department is in the process of reviewing BI tools and currently down to Cognos vs SAP

I am familiar with Cognos and am currently trying to gain some knowledge with SAP and to see how each component fits with our organization.

Currently our organization is setup with IT maintaining the data warehouse and ETL process using PL SQL and an Oracle data base. IT also does the data modelling and publishes the catalog/package using Cognos. Power users (non IT) then create the reports and publish the finished product to the front end users.

In reviewing SAP I am attempting to assign roles/responsibilities as it relates to our organization's structure.

For those of you who use SAP does the following make sense? How is your organization setup as it relates to who uses the tools? (ie IT vs Non-IT)

  • Information Design Tool - IT Professionals
    • create project, connection, data foundation layer, business layer and publish universe
  • Web Intelligence Rich Client -- Report Writers/Power Users (non IT)
    • Using Universe published by IT Professionals create reports
    • Publish to Front end users
  • Dashboard Design -- Report Writers/Power Users (non IT)
    • Design Dashboard and publish to front end users
