What is CD_EVALUATION_PERIODS used for?

Hi Experts,

What is FM CD_EVALUATION_PERIODS used for? Do I need to call that FM after calling CU_READ_RGDIR?

I've tried calling CD_EVALUATION_PERIODS but then I get a notification that the FM is obsolete and not to be used.
