Flat files and Business Contents: Any issues with this scenario?

Hello Experts,

I am working on an HR project and found most of the fields I need in 0PAPA_C02 but found two other Cubes, 0SEM_C21 and 0RPM_C03.

1.

Can I just scan through SAP delivered cubes for fields meeting my needs and bring then together?

2.

If that is possible, then how does BW link these randomly selected fields? Can there be field selection which is not permitted?

3.

Are some of these Cubes researved only for HR projects while others are for say, SALES?

4.

Lastly, if no ODSes exist for these Cubes, and I would like to load my flat files first to the ODSes before to the Cubes, how do I go about this?

Thanks in advance.

    Hi Amanda,

Certainly, you may scan BC for objects you need. But first of all, you must know what the purpose of the project. If it is something common, that, most likely, have been done by the others, then you have a good chance to find the suitable for you BC objects.

As you pointed out, BC infoproviders are dedicated to one (several) functional areas. Though, some BC providers and objects may be used in cross-application areas. For example, the cube you found: 0RPM_C03 – Cost & Time Analyses.

If you found several cubes and want to join data in them, you must know (or figure out) what link them together from business point of view. BW will not automatically link them. And in this case you’d better analyze those cubes for data redundancy and presence of data you’ll never use.

If you want to combine several found IOs in your custom dataprovider, then again you must know (or figure out) relationships between these IOs. Maybe these relationships are already placed into project documentation.

In case if you want to design ODSs (you have already infosources and cubes), then bare in mind that you must to include into ODS structure all fields required for the cube, except navigational attributes and chars and KFs that are going to be determined in TRs or URs.

Consider carefully the ODS’ key fields selection. Their combination should not allow data aggregation that you don’t need. Most likely, in your case data transfer from ODS to cube should be 1:1. Check it in the monitor during data load to cube. If the transfer is not 1:1, first, check the TRs and URs, and if they are OK, redesign ODS by changing key fields combination.

    Best regards,

    Eugene

Thanks greatly. I have some related follow-ups and I will post them in the next post under: "Part 2: Flat files and Business Contents: Any issues with this scenario?"
