Hi All

Can someone tell me what are the pro's and con's to linking the DIR to the material master as apposed to the BOM?

They both have a business purpose.  Common practices I have seen include:

DIR on a BOM - Pro:

- software image files that are loaded into a microchip at the time of manufacturing.  By using a DIR, the exact version of the image can be controlled.  We aware this involves two changes, 1) to the file version 2) to the BOM to include new version.

- Literature that will be "in the box" when product is packaged.  Some may rather handle this using a "material" for the literature.

- file to be loaded onto a CD - ie a CD image that is stored in a DIR.

- keep in mind the concept of a Document BOM in which there is a document folder structure and documents within that folder.  This is a very powerful concept with some interesting applications.

DIR on a BOM - Con:

- DIR on a BOM do not support concept of 'Current version'.  Therefore, as outlined above, 2 changes may be required to make the DIR on the BOM 'current'.

DIR assign to MM - Pro:

- most common object assignment - used to define the "design" of the material.  Common with CAD integration and other design documents that define the material.  Also with literature, etc

- Supports concept of 'current version' where most recent "released" version of document is reported against the MM as 'current'.  Valuable when business must insure everyone is working with released documents only. (ie like in manufacturing)

DIR assign to MM - Con:

- Does not support DIR by plant. (not that I'm aware of)

I would also add to Richard answer that ahaving a DIR in BOM will allow you to control the assignment of new versions with ECN, that is not possible in case of assigning DIR directly on material master. It will also allow you to have a specific version of a DIR assign to a BOM when another version of the same DIR will be assign to another BOM.

CAD integration works also with assigning DIR to BOM
