'12-month Leaderboard' calculation on SCN

Former Member
0 Kudos

Hello Forum,

I'm keen to understand the process of calculation that goes behind displaying the 12-month rolling 'Leader Board' at SCN Community Places.

Since SAP Crystal Reports Design(https://scn.sap.com/community/crystal-reports) is one of the most happening places at SCN, it would be good to know the information with regards to the latest change that happened on 30-September-2013.

Much Appreciated.

Thank you Jitendra, this information was helpful and I'll look forward to the announcement of the top contributors for the 2012-2013 period.

I was more keen to understand the calculation that happens on monthly-basis to show the top 10 contributors in a particular space/community and wanted to hear from the SCN moderators or developers who might be a part of it.

I am particularly interested to find out how the leader board for SAP Crystal Reports design forum was worked out when the counter was refreshed at 30-Sept-2013.

Thank you for the inputs.

May be, you are still not wanting to accept what I'm exactly looking for.

Don't know, who marked this as 'Answered' and 'helpful'.

Hi Prathmesh,

Check this blog to know how Space Leaderboard works?

Thanks Vivek, however, I could not find any mention for the calculation behind the monthly counter resetting of the '12-month leaderboard'.

it is an addition of points (positive and negative) earned within a period of 12 calendar months

what doubts do you have? are they wrong?

Thanks Juergen and sorry I can't copy and paste text(your name) due to restrictions.

Hence the 'ue' substitute.

If you are already aware, the counter resets every month to show the 'leaderboard' on the left-hand-side. Post 30-Sept,I noticed that the points/scores for some members in the top 5 on Crystal Reports Design forum got reduced while they remained the same for few others.

Hence I need some understanding of how that was done.

Note: If its in your capacity and will to attract the attention of SAP Crystal Reports Design Moderators and ask them to comment, then it would be really helpful

if someone started posting in December 2012, or had not contributed in October 2012,  then his points will not change on October 1st 2013 when October 2012 points are reduced.

The leaderboard is dynamic and constantly updating based on member activity. If someone isn't active or their points expire (more than 12 month old), the ranks will change.

"In the 12-month leaderboard, the point changes caused by contribution are instant. So as you can tell, a member still needs to remain active to stay in the leaderboard, but the appearance that points are lost when a contribution is made no longer occurs."

I think, thats quite obvious Juergen, don't you think so? Sorry, it does not answer the exact thing that I'm looking for

This theory is fine, Jason.I was looking for the exact math behind it.

How to differentiate or justify the points calculation that happens over a month-change?

What if 'All' members are actively contributing on each and every day and still there is a difference at the start of a new month(points remain unchanged for some and they reduce for some others) ?

I'm also curious how they get calculated or what does not get included. I get the "12month rolling" it's pretty straight forward. So I would assume when I check my Reputation "Expertise" and I see 2120 points in the SAP NetWeaver Business Warehouse space (all accumulated this year) that you would also see those on the 12 month leaderboard. I only see 1993.

Are there certain points that are assigned to the space but dont count towards the 12month? I see the same in other spaces but the differencies are not that significant..

It's fairly straightforward:

  • Members with the highest current points balance in the space appear on the leaderboard.
  • The points balance include points earned in the space itself and in the past 12 months. Creating content, people liking it, etc. contribute positively towards the points balance.
  • The points balance is deducted when points expire (earned more than 12 months ago) or the content was removed (deleted, rejected). In the case of the later (deleted, rejected), points earned through likes and ratings for the removed content are also deducted.

1 + 1 = 2

2 - 1 = 1

I think I share Prathamesh's sentiments too.

At times I've observed that points for some members are deducted in the range of 30-40 (maybe Prathamesh's case) and at times over 500 (as in my case recently).

When does this 'monthly counter' reset and does it happen at separate intervals for each member?

The calculation is continuous.  Therefore, the rate of accrual and loss of point varies from member to member based on their activity history: not all members earn points every day in a space and, at the same time, the rate at which the points expire vary accordingly.

Was the 500 point loss related to the maintenance two weeks ago? These have since been restored.

Pretty straight forward That means I should see all my points related to one space under expertise also on the leaderboard as they are all gained this year. Thats not the case though. Either the expertise tab under reputation is calculated differently to the leaderboard or there is somthing buggy.

The expertise tab shows lifetime points in the space, not the last 12 months.  This is why there will be a discrepancy between both when you've been earning points in a space for more than 12 months. There's a good example from the 12 month leaderboard here: (See 1st)

Thanks Jason.

The 'Current Points' are shown on the 'Bio' of every member that gives the 'this year' number in the parenthesis.

Please see the snapshot below:

Does the 'This Year' number take into consideration the deduction of points caused due to content rejection/removal or not?

Thanks

But I do not have accumulated points more than 12 months ago thats why I was wondering why there is a discrepancy..

Some content may have been moved and the points are stuck in the space where the content was created.

What space are you noticing this with your points?

In the SAP Netweaver Business Warehouse Expertise says 2150 Points Leaderboard says 2013. Not sure where else they would have ended up.. Also Datawarehousing shows 2778 in expertise and 2675 on the leaderboard.. the leaderboards are almost 300 behind even if points have moved..

thanks

Yes: deductions are deducted.

Request Martin to take up his issue on a separate thread, as its a one-of case.

Appreciate the responses and clarity of calculation shared by Jason.

My query is answered. Thank you.

Hi

I don't know if what I will explain makes sense to you, but maybe it will help.

Yes indeed, points in leaderboards are 12-month points and change every day, and points in spaces of "Expertise" are lifetime points.

Now there is one subtle thing that you may not know. It's about how point assignment works. Points are assigned when you complete a mission, whether you get a badge or not doesn't matter. It could be that the mission requires you to complete several things, and these things could be done in several spaces (contribute content, get a like, be followed, etc). Now, if you were to create content in the BW Warehouse space and did something else there (e.g. got a like) that got you to earn/complete a mission there, you would also get the mission/badge points in that space as well. And similarly, if you complete a mission in a space where you may not be contributing a lot, you would get the mission/badge points there.

Do you see what I mean? Could it be the reason why you see you have more points in spaces of expertise? (lifetime, which is for you anyway just 2013). I'm hoping this is, but if it's not a good explanation we may need to look at your case closer and see if there's a bug.

By the way, I'm impressed at how much you have made yourself a place in the community just in 2013. Congrats! I'm not only talking about your lifetime points (Emerald! More than me!) but also about your strong engagement in various areas that are not just your area of expertise. I've come to know your name over the last couple of months. I know you're a Dad now and your family is priority 1, but I hope we'll continue to see you on SCN. Keep up the good work! And congrats on the new addition to your family.

Best regards,
Laure

thanks for getting back to me on this. I understood how points are assigned to spaces (I read your blogs ) that still doesn't explain why the expertise tab under reputation shows a different number for one space than the 12month leaderboard for the same space.. in theory they should be 1:1 the same at least in my case.

I'm sure I'll stay as active as I can on scn even with my new family addition since both is great fun and I usually can't do things only half hearted..
