Options for BoM Configurations?

Hello Experts,

I'm looking for advice regarding SAP functionality in relation to configurations of a given bill of material (BoM).

An example may be useful to illustrate my problem. Let's say I have a BoM of a tool with components A, B, C, .. Z. In my company, this is a tool that we would rent out to customers, and the tool could have various configurations with several assortments of components. That is, a given configuration may leave out components B and D, while another configuration may leave out components F and M. I don't currently know if there is any way to create these configurations in SAP without creating entirely new material numbers with different components attached.

I would like to know how to create these various configurations in SAP while leaving the original BoM in tact - there is no need to change the original BoM as the tool would have the same basic functionality and associated engineering documentation would be valid for all configurations. So this would conceivably be a series of instances of a BoM (i.e. child BoMs) in which each instance has a different components list but can be traced back to the parent BoM. Another way to look at this is via analogy with object-oriented programming: the BoM would be the class from which multiple objects (i.e. configurations) could be created.

Any suggestions and/or advice regarding this issue are very appreciated. Please let me know if you need further clarification of the problem.

Thank you!
