Original Hobby!!!

This morning when I woke up, I realized that there is no original hobby I have.

I love watching TV...but then almost everyone does that.

I love playing on my PS3/PS2/PSP but then most of people do.

I love driving but most of people do.

and more... more ..

I thought of picking Writing, but my English is poor at its best and also so many people out there does this.

Poem...already an abundant area.

Painting....there's one in every home today..

Then I started a search for finding an original hobby which is not taken over by more than 100 people in the world at least.

And here I am looking for suggestions on the same.

My deadline to start on that is ASAP and only looking for hobby ideas which can be pursued in longer term.

Regards,

Confused Amit

Hi Amit,

Something that as an art is about to die soon - letter writting!

There are many people in the world today who don't use technology for a variety of reasons (electricity being one!).  Why not find a pen pal somewhere that you can start to exchange ideas, hopes and dreams with.

It is amazing how theraputic it is to start to hand write something that another human being will share on a very differnt level to eMails.

It's also a great way to reflect on the pace of our own lives and think about what it is we are doing and why!

With regards

Gill

Great idea!

Also it helps improving your hand-writing, which seems to diminish alot these days. ^^ I don't have a pen pal (although I had one in France when I was still in school), but I'm writing postcards to my friends from my vacations since last year. So that's a start.

Wouldn't it be fun Steffi to see if you could find your old pen pals address and write to them!

Do yo feel a trip to the attic coming on to see if you can find it!

Hmm, no, I think that would just confuse her.

I still have those letters in my letterbox (yes, I keep all the letters and postcards that I got ^^). But since it was an assignment from school for my French class AND it was like 18 years ago AND my French is limited now to "Bonjour", "Salut, ça va? - Ça va bien." and "Je m'appelle Steffi." I couldn't write her much. Also it was just 3 letters, so it's not like she would remember me. *g*

I had more years of Latin at school and couldn't write to a Roman either. ^^ The only language I'm still using (and a lot) is English.

The idea of a pen pal sounds really fascinating, but I know I would get lazy over time and my life isn't that interesting to have so much input for a person that only knows me by letters, I think. 😕

It's the same with a diary (which would be another great way to hone the handwriting and it's said to be therapeutic, too). I stopped that, because I even had not much to say to "me".

Do you have a pen pal?

Yeah Steffi I do, I met a lady in Belarus over 10 years ago and write to her every few months.

It's a great way to take stock of the important things happening in my life, with my family and in my country and I love hearing how things are in Belarus and especially with the kids.  You also appreciate the fact that here I can write whatever I like without any fear of state censorship!

..and you are right about improving my hand writting - perhaps not improving it but in my case take a bit more care as someelse has to read it. My English teacher used to borrow her husbands glasses to read my homework.

With regards

Gill

I have to say, my handwriting was much better in school. But I wrote my ToDo-list in a notebook (the one with paper), so I have practise there, too. ^^

Pen pals from a different country is the best way to go. And 10 years, wow! But you write in English? Or are you brushing up on Russian?

Oh cripes it would have to be in English!

My Russian is awful, I can just about buy milk, bread and beer (the essentials) in the shops.

Well, that is more than I could do in French.

But that's the problem with other languages: learning them, okay. But how to keep the knowledge, when you don't have a change to use them regularly?

If I ever get over my laziness and start to learn a new language, I think I'll keep your suggestion here in mind and will look for a pen pal that speaks that language. ^^ Unless it's Japanese. Then it has to be Skype all the way!

That can be a great hobby, too, by the way. Learning as much languages as you can. You won't find that a lot in the world, Amit.

,

Yours is a good suggestion here and can be consider as a great option

But I do agree with how long can I write given my poor track record with reading and writing.

I am one of those very few people in the world who believe reading books is a waste of time instead try to experience it and use logics for latter. Reading books and gaining knowledge is like you are considering someone else opinion and same goes for writing. If I am writing anything means I want someone to follow my opinion

I did learn French some 12 years back, but due to no practical use of it my today's knowledge is totally restricted to 'Comment allez vous?' and 'Comment vous appellez vous'.

I never had a Pen pal but use to love writing letters to my grand father when I was in school. The only negative part was I use to mail it to them without putting ticket on it so he has to pay the fine every time

Amit

I bet your grand father was glad to pay for the stamp for the joy he read in your ltter 🙂

Hmm, I love reading. ^^ And not everything you can read about is something you could experience in real life. For example do I love reading about past times (100 years ago and more). Or fantasy and sci-fi.

And I see reading as food for my thoughts, not a way to stop thinking myself and just adapt the opinion of someone else.

But I guess, it's not for everyone. The love for books has skipped a generation in our family, because my grandmother is a vivid reader, too, and my mother doesn't like reading.

@Gill: I think you're right. *g*

I graduated in History (Medieval/Modern - American, Europe & SE Asia) & Philosophy (Mythology - French, Latin, Greek & India) and one thing I am sure is most of the books are influenced by author's self belief and less on the actual facts.

They never shy of writing that King Soloman did this (as an example only) as if they were there when he was doing that.

Books can provide an alternate view to the incident but cannot be considered as a real fact for anything more than 100 years old. Facts are fabricated a lot in the course of time.

Wow, history and philosophy. Didn't you have to read a lot during your studies? Or did your dislike of reading just started when you had to read all those required books? ^^

I know it's always hard to finish a book you're not interested in. There were some of those in Literature class I had to endure.

Still my only interest in books is History but during my study I realize that reading books can only provide one view..if need to know more even in history visit the sites and museums.

Fantasy; never interested me and so is fiction but I am great fan of watching National Geographic and Discovery Channel on TV and can watch them for hours.

Yes, I like docus on there, too. But in the end that's the same as with books: you see the view of the creater of the show. It's just another medium to transport knowledge (but a great one!).

And I love museums and ruins (or not so ruined old stuff), too! I've been to Rome twice, for example, and need to go there again, because I haven't seen it all yet. The same with Pompeji. Old landmarks are just fascinating.

Photography is the most common hobby (at least everyone calls it a hobby) in today's world.

With the likes of Lightroom and instagram; everyone has started putting photography as the hobby in their profile.

Yes I agree with you Amit about putting Photography as a Hobby in Profile.

But if you learn photography with dedication then only you will become a professional

Hi Amit,

If not Gym.. you can go for yoga...

I am doing it form past 2 years and trust me...its awsm ... and it has actually become my hobby now

I used to hate doing it... bt it has come into my routine..and d day i dnt do it... i feel so incomplete...

Try cycling... go on adventurous trip via cycles...

There are many groups who organise such one day or two days trips... you cn go fr it...

That will save fuel too

Priyanka

Jason - Becoming a moderator is really not in my hands

Manjunath - Gym: almost everyone is running there

Jitendra - Already done that, doing that as per availability. But this cannot be developed as hobby as need money also to my self going. So, its a time dependent thing. Yeah when I was a developer that time I use to have a more routine life then now \

Dilip - Collecting stamp is not original but yeah burning them is...but to get to burning them I have to adopt the not-so-original hobby of collecting stamps in longer term.

When I was working with previous employer, once in a week I used to go to one slum area near my office with my friends for 2 hours and used to teach maths and science to small children residing in that area.

You may try this.
