Help Regarding netweaver developer infrastructure?

Hi All,

we have XI installed on WAS 6.40 with SLD. Now I want to install JDI for some java development. could someone please clarify me the following?

1. where can i find JDI installable, is it only one file which will install the whole JDI or will there be a executable for each of the components of JDI such as one for DTR, one for CMS, one for CBS etc?

2. can i install it on the same j2ee engine where XI is installed pointing to the same SLD of XI?

3. we want only DTR part of the JDI, if there is only one installable for JDI, how can i avoid installing of the other components such as CBS, CMS, DTR.

4. after the whole installation, what should i do from the client side. is it just installing the NWDS studio on the clients PC and do some configuration stuff.

5. I dont want to use Development Components, so I am planning to use only DTR component of JDI, what do u suggest?

6. good links for installing and configuring jdi?

It would be really helpful if someone could help me in this regard.

Thank you

Hi Shiva,

Some of the answers are given below:

2. As per the SAP note 737368 it is not advisable to install JDI on the same server as XI. You can however you the same SLD as that of XI. Additionally you should also not install JDI on a server which you are going to use as a runtime system in a Track. However since you dont plan to use the complete JDI this shouldnt be a problem.

One question though why do you just want to use the DTR part of JDI.

3. No you cannot avoid installing CBS and CMS. You can avoid using it.

4. Just installation of NWDS is enough.

5. Again why dont you want to use the complete JDI.

hi sidarth and venkat,

thank you for ur replies.

1. as we are not doing much custom development and only wanted to have versioning, we are planning to install DTR only.

2. CMS, CBS is hard to configure and requires some time to configure, so we are planning only to have dtr for first time and later install cms and cbs

are we heading in right direction??

3. In the scenario as explained above, what i think is SLD, Nameserver and UMe changes are not necessary .. am i correct here??

3. as you said, installation of Netweaver Developer studio (NWDS) is enough on client side, how does this IDE knows the existence of that particular DTR, it definetely needs some configuration, isnt it? what sort of config should be done on client installation of NWDS?

Thank you

Hi Shiva,

Regarding point 3 you go through the documention in the link provided below. It tells you what settings you need to do in NWDS so as to import the Dev config and all.

http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/c3/2656405aff1e24e10000000a1550b0/content.htm

As for points 1 and 2 i feel you should still configure all three components. If you refer to the installation guide you will find that configuring CBS and CMS is not that cumbersome. Also using all three components is much more beneficial.

Just read the documentation for some time and see if it fits your bill.

Hi Shiva,

You have to install all DTR,CBS and CMS but if at all if you want to use DTR alone you can use this servers as chek-in, check out and resolves version conflict.

However in oder to have development, quality and production system you have to have DTR,CBS and CMS. Infact installation guide gives you step by step procedure to install configure.

Hope this helped you

hi Sidharth, RK

Thanks for your replies again. I was going through the documentation on scenarios of JDI and have the following questions.

1. Is it mandatory that I should develop my projects as Development Components (DC's) if I follow scenarios 2,2+ and 3? because in the docs it is said, this scenarios are useful for component model. am i right here?

2. Yep, you are right that all the components will be installed by default when i install JDI, but will only work when configured.

3. i didnt get the difference between scenario 2+ and scenario 3, as the examples in the documentation i.e. one SC depending on another SC. so could you please tell me the difference.

Thank you

Hi Shiva,

At this point of time no need to woory about scenarios infact Sceanrio 2 nomore in existence, infact according to Manohar Sreekant it seems they will merge Scenario 2+ and Scenario 3 finally they will arrive something. As of now Scenario 2+ deals with single track and Scenario 3 with multiple tracks just follow the tutorials you will come to know the difference.

i think we have to wait and see what SAP will introduce in the place of Scenario 2+ and 3.

hope this info helped you in understandng Scenarios

(If you are satisfied please close the thread)

Hello!!!

I am trying to setup the JDI process for scenario 2+ or 3. The JDI is running on the DEV system and SLD is altogether on a different system(Here the installation and configuration of JDI & SLD was carried out by an admin). So I started implementing (assuming that JDI & SLD was configured well) the Scenario 3 tutorial provided in the help.sap.com.

I have the following issues in doing so

1. When I try to import depenedent SCA's in transport studio, the SCA's fail to import. This done once a track has been created in the CMS and after checking in the dependent SC archives.

2. I get this "CBS SERVER ERROR : CBS failed to communicate with some other server (internal code : Communication Error)" when I try to check in the DTR activity. The checked in activity contains a SC with out any dependencies on other SC's.

I shall apprecaite your response very much.

Thanks in advance

Hi Venkat,

Thank you for reply

Just one final question to close the thread:

1. If I follow scnearios 2+ / 3, is it mandatory that from now on the development that we do must be in DC's and SC's (no more simple Java Projects)? i.e for example if I want to edit a single par file, should i create a development component and import this PAR file into development component.

Thank you

Hi Shiva,

Yes Scenario 2+ and 3 deals with DC's as you know DC consists of Development objects hence DO can be java file, java project, spreadsheet, word.doc file

<b>What product Consists of?</b>

Prodcut->Software Component/s ->Development Component/s ->Development Object/s

-

for example if u want to edit a single par file, U have to create a development component and import this PAR file into development component.

hope this solved ur problem
