SEM, BW Server Consolidation

Hi Experts

At the initial stages our consultants recommended to have different servers for BW 3.1 and SEM-BW 3.2. Currently these servers are not utilized fully and I want to know whether it is a good idea to combine these servers? If so how?

    Hi Sudarshan,

From BW 3.x on SEM/BPS is a completely integrated product of SAP BI (read BW). Indeed you could install 2 separate systems for BW <-> SEM/BPS. In my experience BW systems are so unlimited scalable (when you have the right approach technically) that this would only make sense in a very large and heavily used environment. Think in DB +500 GB and + 250 concurrent users. Here it could be that the salability of especcially the DB could become a bottleneck. Otherwise separate systems only will cost additional maintenance and licenses.

Any questions left: ask, if you're satisfied: please reward.

    Kind regards, Patrick Rieken.

    Sudarshan,

It is a fine approach to consolidate the BW and SEM servers into a single instance. In order to consolidate the instance, simply transport your BPS objects to your BW instance.

    • Hi Dave Fox

We are currently not using BPS what we are using is BCS. Our consultants have customized some objects on the SEM production server and no one knows about these objects, is it still advisable to consolidate and is there any way to transport all the objects at once?

      Thanks & Regards
