Hi Experts,
The following error pops up during overall PR release with ME54N.
ME 816 - System error (error in method initiate_Release)
This error is appearing only for 1 PR. I have not changed the release strategy recently. The changeability indicator for my release indicator is set to '4' - Changeable, new release in case of new strat. or val. change.
I have been able to release this PR at one level (Release Code 01). The second level of release causes this message.
I have not been able to locate any satisfactory answers for this in SCN. Please help.
I have been able to release the 2 PRs using mass release ME55.
Still don't know the reason of the error. But for now will lay the issue to rest, till it crops up again.

Check whether you had implemented any User exits / Badis for the Release procedure in the System.

all of a sudden has usually just a typical root cause, a new transport came into the system, e.g. a new exit, and activated business function or even OSS notes with side effects. (I assume you would know if you had just upgrade to a new release or enhancement package)
or a small ABAP for a quick fix like short closing or similar.
Make an update after you found the reason. we are always curious and keen to learn something new.
