BI 4.1 SP1 available on SMP but installation cannot proceed

BI 4.1 SP1 Software download now available on Service Market Place.

We downloaded the installation files. In our sandbox environment we have 4.0 . We wanted to upgrade to 4.1 from 4.0 by installing both side by side.

However, i am getting the  installation cannot proceed error as it found an old version of Business Objects exist in the system.

Please suggest do we have the option of installing both 4.1 and 4.0 side by side?

Thanks.

you cannot install both side by side. Why would you even try that ?

BI4.1 is a minor release of the same version of the product as SAP BI4.0, in old Business Objects terms, BI4.1 is a Service Pack 1 on top of BI4.0

It was never possible to install XI3.0 and Xi3.1 on same box side by side or have Xi3.1 SP3 and XI3.1 SP5 together.

same concept here.

Thanks Dave.

So eventually, when we install 4.1 on the same box where BO 4.0 is running it should overwrite.

No need of any content migration as well.

but i wonder, why did it give me this error then?

Because you cannot install full package on top of existing product, you need Upgrade package.

So, we should just download the BI Platform Servers 4.1 SP01- Update file not SP00 Patch 1,2,3,4?

Update installs are in Support Packages and Patches section, full product packages are in Installations and Upgrades section of the Download site at SMP.

Jawahar,

Looking at the PAM for 4.1, it was made GA today, 8/29/2013.

Hi,

everything said here!

Maybe some additional info: If you want to have both Versions running (what is totally OK like i.e. for testing purpose) you should consider setting up a second Server and install 4.1 on it.

Sorry Denis, i don't know why i typed Dave..in photo you look like him

Also, one silly question i have ~~ Why did SAP named it as BI 4.1 if it's just a minor release compared to 4.0 they should have done it via SP8 as well?

Because i through we have to migrate  the content from 4.0 to 4.1 but now it's just a simple upgrade. No content migration.

Thanks,

Tilak

BI4.0 new major release, 4.1, 4.2, 4.3 etc are minor releases.

SP in BI4 world means support pack.

Xi3.1 terms:
SP = Service Pack = Minor Release in Bi4.x

FP = Fix Pack = SP (support pack) in BI4.x

LaFix = Patch in BI4.x

Hi tilak,

Following up on Denis's comments, you can't install 4.1 side-by-side with a 4.0 installation. If you had a 3.0 or 3.1 installation, sure, you could stand up both on the same server. Considering you already have 4.0 installed, you would need to install the upgrade package onto the 4.0 installation.

For more information on that, please read the following guide: https://service.sap.com/~sapidb/011000358700000456982013E/sbo41_bip_upgrade_en.pdf
