Integrating an external application with SAP ECC

I am new to SAP development and could use some help
navigating the many options offered by SAP. I need to be able to read and write
data to a SAP ECC system from and external application (non SAP) and I am
looking for suggestions on what SAP software will be needed to develop this. Is
there a SAP ERP developer edition that can be easily installed? What would be
the best API or web service to use that is Microsoft .Net compatible? I’ve just
started looking into Netweaver and Netweaver Gateway or is there a better way.
Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Ralph,

If i am not wrong your scenerio is

Non-Sap--->SAP PI--->SAP ECC.

Non SAP wil send the data and that need to be updted in SAP ECC.

You can do it.Non SAP to PI make soap connection,you write a program in servelt or Java(check with Java Guys) so that whenever there is any value in non sap system it will get push to SAP PI and from SAP PI to SAP ECC make Proxy communiction and in ECC write a program in abap to update the data.

This Scernerio will work.Let me know if you need any help...I will explian you in details.

Yes, that is the scenario and I would greatly appreciate  a more detailed explanation of how this would work. Say for example, I am trying to read and write to a sales order that is in SAP ECC. The non-SAP application is a C# application.

Thanks for taking the time to write this article. I have been on vacation or I would have replied sooner. I looked at your article briefly before I went on vacation and looked to be very helpful.
