Windows Server 2012 - Business Objects SP7 - Serves Not Starting

Former Member

Hello,

I am installing Business Objects SP7 on windows server 2012. I did a basic install with default setting.

Everything went smooth. Logged into CMC and noticed

1. Both Connection servers stuck in Initializing stage

2. Crystal cache server started with errors

Checked

1. Licence key = ok

anyone else had any experience with SP7 on Windows 2012. I am thinking to revert back to Windows 2008 as I have never experienced these issues before.

Hello Pierre,

Spent two days on it and could not resolve the issue.

Installed BOBJ 4.1 SP1 and that worked perfectly. Therefore i recommended you install 4.1 SP1. You should be able to run the 4.1 SP1 patch and upgrade the current version your on to 4.1 SP1 and it should fix it.

Once 4.1 is installed run the new wizard feature in CMC and optimize the APS's.

Take a backup first though.

kind regards

David

Thanks for you quick reply David.

I was installing 4.0 SP7 cause I thought all new 4.1 would not be ready... I'll try the 4.1.

Hi David,

There are many confusing points here:

Business Objects SP7 (what do mean by this), BOBJ 4.1 SP1 (when was this installed)

Please check the install logs which can provide us with more insight of the issue.

thanks,

Pierre,

I had issues with the Crystal Services not starting.

In my case, I tried a uninstall and reinstall of BOB 4.0 SP06 and patched with SP07,  same result.

Also tried a repair option, but the results were the same.

We opened up an OSS message with SAP and tried a re-registration of the DLL with no effect on the issue.

In the end, I did a complete uninstall, and installed BOBJ 4.1 and the services issue was resolved.   BOBJ 4.1 STD.   Hope this helps.

You might face compatibility issues if the current version is BI 4.0 SP07 and upgrading to BI 4.1 SP1.

I believe it is safer to upgrade from BI 4.0 SP06 to BI 4.1 SP1.

Hello Arun,

Sure, let me clear that up

  • BI Business Objects 4.0 SP7 (Service Pack 7)

The latest one is

  • BI Business Objects 4.1 SP1 (Service Pack 1).

4.0 is now the older version of BOBJ (Business Objects) which is still in support for a few more years. 4.1 Service Pack 1 got released last month i believe. It is a straight install upgrade from 4.0 to 4.1 with no migration or upgrade tools needed.

One thing we did find in 4.1 SP1 was that a few webi reports which were created in 4.0 would not load data. Turned out of we opened the formula's we used in web, remove the code, close the formula, open it up and past the code back in fixed the issue.

Hope that helps

Hi David,

This is much better picture of the issue.

- As you had mentioned the issue is with few of the webi reports which were created in BI 4.0, so you mean that the other webi reports created in BI 4.0 works fine in BI 4.1 SP1 and the issue with some particular webi reports?

- Are the newly created reports in BI 4.1 SP1 (similar to the problematic reports) work fine?

- Are these problematic reports working fine in Webi Rich Client?

- As mentioned, Webi reports would not load data so do we get any error message, warning, etc ?

Thanks,

Arun

Hello Arun,

-Yes that is correct, most web reports were ok. The ones which had some more complex formula's had the issue. We could still drag the object into the report but when we hit refresh the object did not populate with data. If we then we into the formula, remove the line of code, saved it, then re-added it back in it would fix the issue.

-Newly created reports are ok in 4.1. The entire interface is much smoother, faster and it deploys tomcat 7 by default which seems to be better as well. We are currently testing in IE 10.

-The problematic reports had the same issue in rich client and web version.

- No error message, just no data displaying.

Hope that helps

cheers

this is an old and outdated discussion.   please open your own thread

also, punctuation would help, if you are asking a question?

If you want to go to 4.1 SP2, then use the SP02 update/patch, and just apply in-place ontop of the 4.0 SP07.

H

Thank you for replying. Here is a status update of where we are at

1. loaded up a VM session of windows 2008 R2, installed the same BO installed, everything worked first time, no issues.

2. Rebuild another 2012 VM, installed the same BO version SP7, found issues again with Adaptive servers, etc. I have to manualy go to the lib directory and install the missing drivers. Have tried a repair, no luck.

Has anyone else actualy loaded up a 2012 Windows image and tried the install with SP7?

Hi,

Since Win2012 is listed in the PAM for BI4.0 SP07, http://service.sap.com/~form/sapnet?_SHORTKEY=01100035870000735547&_SCENARIO=01100035870000000202&_O...

i'd recommend you contact Support, log an OSS and work it through with them. I'm surprised this isn't working out the box, although I haven't used this version yet myself (neither O/s nor BI build)

Hi David,

Use process monitor tool to identify missing files which you can later replace from a working environment if you have one, else do a repair installation and make sure that antivirus and firewall is turned off, and Windows DEP services are enabled only for windows essential programs.

Hi David ,

In most cases, to detect whether files or libraries are missing after an update or a patch install:

  1. Check the InstallData logs folder for the Update or Patch install timestamp (Eg. C:\Program Files (x86)\SAP BusinessObjects\InstallData\logs\<install_timestamp>)
  2. Typically, you should find only 3 files in this folder (InstallManifest.sqllite, setupexe.log and setupengine.log) by Default
  3. But, if you see any other log files such as InstallDU-*.log (Example: InstallDU-cvom.java-4.0-core-nu,14.0.4.738.log etc), this indicates that some files or libraries have not been installed properly
  4. In such cases, libraries such as ras21core.jar are missing from the <BI40 installation>\java\lib directory contributing to the issue
  5. Ensure that all Non-Essential services are stopped as per update install best practices
  6. Run a Repair on the BASE BI Platform 4.0 from Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features > SAP Business Objects BI Platform 4.0 > Uninstall/Change > REPAIR

What errors are being observed for CR Cache. Is a PID generated or can you see the connection service exe in the task manager.

Just to check; disable the firewall and Antivirus temproraily and observe whether the connection server comes up properly.

As the environment is still in its primary state, try to re-install the product.

Hope this helps.
