Bex 3.5 Analyzer and Query Designer supported by future releases?

We are currently using Bex 3.5 Analyzer and Query Designer. With Analysis Office 1.4, I am able to open Bex 3.5 Workbooks.

Just wondering, will Bex 3.5 Queries and Workbooks still be supported by future release of Analysis Office (ie. after 1.4)? Is there any plan to support Workbooks/Queries only from Bex 7.x onwards?

Hi Linda,

here is the official wording:

BEx 3.5 is part of BW 3.5/SAP NetWeaver 04 and the maintenance cycle is coupled to this release (see SAP note 1410878 - SMP Login required).

BEx 3.5 in BW 7.0x and BW 7.3x will be supported as long as BEx 3.5 (NetWeaver 2004) is in extended Maintenance (2013). Afterwards BEX 3.5 is in customer specific Maintenance. Please note that full PAM support of BEx 3.5 cannot be granted by SAP - as Microsoft has removed, e.g., support for some components
within Windows 7 that had been used by BEx Web Application Designer 3.5.

Hi Ingo,

Thanks for the reply. The official wording seems to be the general statement regarding Bex 3.5. However, what about the support of Bex 3.5 in relation to Business Objects Analysis for Office? Can Bex 3.5 Queries and Workbooks still be opened with the next release of Analysis for MS Office (ie. after 1.4)?

Linda

Hello Linda,

that is correct - that is the overall wording for the support of BEx 3.5 queries in general.

BEx 3.5 in BW 7.0x and BW 7.3x will be supported as long as BEx 3.5 (NetWeaver 2004) is in extended Maintenance (2013). Afterwards BEX 3.5 is in customer specific Maintenance.

Means after 2013 the support for BEx 3.5 queries in BW in general is in customer specific support

Hi Ingo,

Thanks for the reply. But can I have a direct answer in relation to 'Analysis for MS Office', assuming we discard customer-specific support?

We are planning to use Analysis for Office (not decided on release 1.4 or later), but not sure whether we can migrate our BEx 3.5 Queries/Workbooks soon enough. That's why we'd like to plan the migration with consideration of Analysis for MS Office (ie. from which release of Analysis for Office onwards, will BEx 3.5 Queries/Workbooks be unsupported).

Linda

Hi Linda,

Let me put it this way.

Analysis for Office is supporting migration of 3.5 workbooks now (1.4).

It is very hard to promise if we will extend this support for 1.5 or 2.0.

Why? :

When AO 1.4 was released BEx 3.5 was still under maintenance.

BEx 3.5 maintenance has already elapsed. So, there is a possibility for SAP to stop supporting migration of 3.5 workbooks for later releases.

I'm not saying that SAP will stop it. All I'm saying is that it legally could.

Now, let us understand what happens during migration of workbooks to get a better picture.

When a 3.5 workbook is migrated to AO, we only make a copy of the workbook and the original copy remains.

And post migration, this AO workbook will behave similar to the workbooks natively created in AO.

So, you don't have to worry about 3.5 support if you are migrating the workbook now.

If you are planning to make any changes to 3.5 workbooks then, this is not supported as BEx 3.5 maintenance is over. But, you can modify the migrated AO workbook in future releases as well.

i.e the workbooks that you migrate now can be modified in 1.5 or 2.0.

Hope this clarifies your concern.

Bharath
