My client is planning for a SP upgrade frpm SP3 to SP6.

So, do i need to just download the SBOP BI Platform Servers 4.0 SP06 Patch 1,2,3 from Service Market Place --> Support Packages/Patches and start installing them.

Yes before that, i have to make sure all the services (except CMS, File repositories) + tomcat + java to be stopped.

Please help me how to proceed. Thanks...

Just Download BI4.0 SP6 upgrade installer and install it for SP6.

if you would like to apply SP6 patch 3,first install SP6 and then download SP6 patch 3 Installer ( patch 3 will be having all fixes which are included in 1 and 2).

Best practices when performing an upgrade or patch install on your BI4 Platform:

1. Make sure to go over the latest support & feature pack release notes available  at SAP Help Portal

2. Make sure to Turn OFF ALL servers Except essential servers: CMS, FRS (input/output),Tomcat (or other App server)

  •      Using a task manager, kill all processes* other than those essential servers listed above.

Using Windows Task Manager: Show all processes from all users, right click on the process           you   wish to terminate, select End Process Tree

  •    Optionally you may wish to use another task manager such as process explorer ii. to kill   the    processes
  • If you use the DB2 bundled CMS DB, do NOT kill that process*
  • Kill all JAVA .EXE processes (using task manager: right click, end process tree on each java process; or use process explorer)

3. Once you have completed the above steps, look through the task manager to be sure all processes are still down and did not auto-recover, or restart.

Specific to clustered or distributed environments :

1. Always run the update installer one server at a time [sequentially]:

2.DO NOT run simultaneous update installs; run each update, on each tier independently - starting with the intelligence

tier (CMS)

Update ALL intelligence tiers first (all machines with a CMS being actively used), then move on to the processing tier, then the web tier.

3.The installer updates metadata in the CMS database. Updating concurrently is known to cause failures in the

installer and will severely impact the success rate of the install.

Thanks JRK for your help.

But i have already gone through the SAP Note and other best practices wiki page on the SP upgrade.

My question was bit specific - like SP upgrade from SP 3 to SP 6?

Or Is it a direct step or do we have to go one by one like 3 to 4 to 5 to 6 ?

You can go directly from SP3 to SP6. Please see the SAP forward fit plan.

Hi Jawahar,

Thank you so much for helping me again.

sorry it's BO XI 3.1 SP3 to SP6 ...

Where can i find the information that we can directly go from SP3 to SP6

Do i need to just download the below SP6 file from SMP --> Support Packages/Patches area and run the executable? Will it overwrite the existing SP3 version?

Also i see BOE XI 3.1 Fix Pack 6.1 (Server + Client) below this file, do i need to download this as well and run the setup file one ServicePack 06 is over?

I thought you were asking about BO 4.0 on your original question. My answer is true for BO 4.0.

When we upgraded, we installed Base->SP3->SP5, But we have not installed SP6. I am not sure SP5 is per-requsite for SP6 in 3.1, But SP3 is must while upgrading from Base version before you install SP4 or SP5

If you want to install SP6 patch1, then you need to download Fixpack 6.1

Thank you and sorry for the confusion.

My client is on XI 3.1 SP3 and they want to move to XI 3.1 SP6. But still the question is open, can we directly jump to SP6 without going through 3,4,5 route?

So i think in that case i dont need to download Fix pack 6.1.

in XI3.1 you cannot go directly from XI3.1 SP3 to SP6, you have to go to SP4 or SP5 first.

Sp3 ->Sp4->SP6 or SP3->SP5->Sp6

Hi Denis,

so it's like downloading Sp3 , SP4, SP6 .exe files from SMP and start executing them one by one?

Yes i will make sure the servers other than CMS and File repositories are disabled / stopped while doing this activities. Do you think , this is enough or some precautionary steps need to follow?
