Moving SAP directories

Hi, we plan to change our SAN storage hosting the SAP application.

We are on Windows 2003, running SAP ERP6 on Oracle 10.2.

Below is the current directory setup for SAP ERP:

RedoLog_A (Drive M)

RedoLog_B (Drive N)

ArchiveLog (Drive O)

Oracle Binary (Drive P)

SAP Binary (Drive Q)

Data (Drive R)

Above Drives are located in SAN. We will install a new SAN storage to replace existing one, what would be the best way

to move the data to new storage? Can I do this way:

1. To replace current RedoLog_A (Drive M), install a new drive say Drive Z

2. Copy all files from Drive M to Drive Z

3. Rename Drive M to another alphabet

4. Rename Drive Z to Drive M.

5. Repeat steps for other Drives

Will this work?

Hi Daren,

Best option would be to

1) Take a full offline database backup

2) Install a new system with new SAN Storage

3) Restore the full backup taken in step 1

Your approach looks ok but on Windows environment there could be some issues with registry entries.

Hope this helps.

Hi Daren,

If you are not replacing the operating system or re-installing anything, then i cant see any reason why this will not work. if you keep the drive letter and the directory structures the same along with the files etc, then you should be fine.

Please update the thread once you are completed so we know if you where successfull

The OS will not be touched as it's in a local disk, only the other drives are affected as they are in SAN. And yes I will keep the same drive letter and same directory structure after the rename.

Hi Daren,

moving datafiles, logfiles and even controlfiles is possible without renaming any drivenames at all.

It's all done in Oracle at all as described here: http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/misc/renaming-or-moving-oracle-files.php

Thanks all. I am looking for the most efficient way to move the data, I think renaming and copying the files from old to new drive is much easier as compared to changing it at Oracle level.

Hello

Like I said before there is no need to do anything at the OS level or install the Oracle software again.

As long as you maintain all the files with the same drive names in the way it was before then everything should work fine.

Renaming the files at the Oracle level is required only if you are moving the database files to another drive with a different drive letter.

Hello

As long as you put all the files in the same drives and with the same drive names like it was before then it should be alright.

But make sure you stop all the SAP and Oracle services before you move the files.
