System Copy - Basic questions

Former Member

Hi Experts,

i am planning to move our SAP HR System to a new Hardware, OS and a new Database version.

Source System:

- Windows Server 2003

- MS SQL 2005

- SAP Version SAP ECC 6.0

- Kernel Non Unicode

- 32 Bit Architecture

Destination:

- Windows Server 2008

- MS SQL 2012

- Kernel Non Unicode

- 64Bit Architecture

Now i have some basic questions which method i should use to migrate the system to the new platform.

1. Is it a homogeneous and heterogeneous System Copy? Source and destination are MS Windows and MS SQL.

2. Should i use the Installation DVDs which i have used to install the source system few years ago or should i download the latest one for ECC 6.0.

3. Which steps i need to do in which order?

Thanks for your help.

Best regards,

Klaus

Hi

1. Is it a homogeneous and heterogeneous System Copy? Source and destination are MS Windows and MS SQL.                                                                                                                                                                                                             Homogeneous system copy method either backup /restore or Attach / detach

2. Should i use the Installation DVDs which i have used to install the source system few years ago or should i download the latest one for ECC 6.0.

Yes you can use the same installation media.but kernel you may  require to download latest one.

3. Which steps i need to do in which order?

Hello

You are doing a Homogeneous System Copy

All your answers are mentioned here:

Note 960769 - Windows: Migration from 32-bit to 64-bit (x86_64)

Note 151603 - Copying an SQL Server database

If I were you I will set up a new system on the target machine and then follow the above notes:

Make sure you adapt all the SAP parameter based on 64 bit architecture.

Hi Klaus,

As you are not changing your OS or DB and just migrating it to better versions it will be just simple homogeneous system copy ,it is always better to download the latest media again from service market place and use,you can still use you old media for ECC6.0 but just check the compatibility before using it.

         Hope it helps.

Hi Klaus,

It might also be possible that you have to upgrade the kernel in between the system copy if error occurs so please keep it in back of your mind if you encounter any error.

Hi Experts,

thanks for the many replies.

I have installed a new Server with Windows Server 2008 R2 X64.

This is the way i will try:

1. Install SQL Server 2012

2. Recover the SQL Backup from the old Server

3. Start System Copy Process with the latest SPM Manager DVD using X64 Kernel

Is this way OK?

Best regards,

Klaus

Hello

Isn't it easy to setup a new system on the target machine first and then restore the database with one of the methods with the help of these SAP notes ?

Note 666805 - MS SQL Server: Migrating from 32-bit to 64-bit

Note 683447 - SAP Tools for MS SQL Server

Note 960769 - Windows: Migration from 32-bit to 64-bit (x86_64)

Note 151603 - Copying an SQL Server database

The first note should do the work for you.

1. Is it a homogeneous and heterogeneous System Copy? Source and destination are MS Windows and MS SQL.

homogeneous System Copy as OS/DB is not changing.

2. Should i use the Installation DVDs which i have used to install the source system few years ago or should i download the latest one for ECC 6.0.

Latest Software should work fine. I think now you need to use SPM in place of installation master CDs.

3. Which steps i need to do in which order?

Download System Copy Guide for your OS+DB and check steps.

Hi Klaus,

1. Is it a homogeneous and heterogeneous System Copy? Source and destination are MS Windows and MS SQL.

It is a homogenous system copy

2. Should i use the Installation DVDs which i have used to install the source system few years ago or should i download the latest one for ECC 6.0.

Recommendation is to use new Installation master and kernel DVDs as well as other installation DVDs downloaded from Marketplace.

3. Which steps i need to do in which order?

You may need to first migration your SAP environment from 32-bit to 64-bit environment . During this time you can change the OS from Windows 2003 to Windows 2008.

For upgrade to MSSQL 2012 you need to check certain pre-requisites.

Refer my blog http://scn.sap.com/community/sqlserver/blog/2013/07/25/things-to-consider-before-upgrading-to-mssql-... for more details while performing an upgrade to MSSQL 2012.

Hope this helps.

Hi Blab,

First of all, you are switching from 32bit to 64bit architecture, so it's a mitigation, an heterogeneous system copy.

2nd, You have to download all new dumps from SMP as per the target operating system, follow the standard system copy guide.

Follow these notes,

Note 960769 - Windows: Migration from 32-bit to 64-bit (x86_64)

Note 799058 - Setting Up Microsoft SQL Server 2005
