Hi,
I am trying to set up an instance of: "SAP NetWeaver AS ABAP and SAP BW 7.50 SP02 on ASE [Developer Edition]". However, I would like to reduce the volume sizes of the virtual machines to t2.micro-Instance to reduce costs. Unfortunately, also when using the advanced mode, I am not able to change the volume type.
1.) Which developer Edition is creating the least costs but is including SAP BW?
2.) Or is there a cheaper way to get more hands- on experience in SAP BW?
3.) Trial- editions are just running 90 days, right?
Thanks in advance for your answer.
Kind regards
Achim

Hi Achim,
t2.micro is quite weak to run AS ABAP. In SAP CAL you will find only VM sizes that match the system requirements for the particular solution.
The trial solutions have different license agreement but the same system requirements, i.e. the trial solution will not optimize the AWS costs.

Hi,
I created an instance of SAP NetWeaver AS ABAP and SAP BW 7.5 SP01 on SAP HANA SP10 using AWS.
The instance runs well, i can connect using Hana Studio and SAP GUI.
But I have a issue with the pre-configured users DEVELOPER and BWDEVELOPER.
These users do not exist in the ABAP server, only DDIC and SAP*??!!
Thanks for help!

Is there any timetable when S/4HANA will be available for Azure Deployment in CAL? And will we get a developer edition of S/4HANA?

Hi,
I created an instance of SAP NetWeaver Application Server ABAP & SAP Business Warehouse 7.4 SP10 on SAP HANA 1.0 SP8 and tried to log on to the virtual machine using Remote Desktop.
But I received this error: "Remote desktop can't connect to the remote computer for one of these reasons:1. the remote access to the server is not enabled 2. the remote computer is turned off
3. the remote computer is not available on the network".
I'm trying to connect to the server (SAP Frontend Externe IP-Adresse)
How can I establish the RDC?
Thank you.

Hi Manfred,
I try to connect the remote desktop through the SAP Management Console (https://cal.sap.com) and from my private Laptop.
I have disabled some firewall settings and the connection is now well established.
Thank you,

Hi,
I have the same issue like Marco, My Trial is running since 15.November 2015 without any problems.
Since yesterday I get the error partner xx.xx.xx.xx:sapdp00 not reached. WSAECONNREFUSED. Error 10061.
Neither the logon via SAP GUI nor the logon from the Remote Desktop work. Both worked without any problem until now.
Thanks for help!

Hello,
Same symptoms as Marco: Simply cannot connect, as if the ABAP server is not running.
So I logged onto the ASE system via the console, found that this was indeed the case. After some poking around I found the cause in the ASE log file:
00:0000:00000:00000:2015/11/06 12:37:44.04 kernel

(I stripped some date/timestamps for readability)
Looking at an older log I see that it had been warning me all along:
00:0000:00000:00000:2015/09/25 08:58:13.84 kernel SySAM: WARNING: ASE will shutdown on Sun 01 Nov 2015 12:00:00
AM UTC, unless a suitable ASE_CORE license is obtained before that date.
My bad, haven't been reading my database log every day. Any input on how I can get this up and running again? I thought the developer edition was supposed to have an ongoing license:
AS ABAP incl. BW 7.4 SP8 on SAP ASE 15.7
[Developer Edition]
I would try the minsap license page, but I don't have a hardware key, because I cannot log in. 😞
Any assistance appreciated,
Mike
Edit: I just found the CAL space, posting this issue over there.

Mike is actually right, the ASE license of instances deployed before November 2nd expired end of October. If you plan to continue using your system, send me a private message and I will try to solve the problem together with you. We are looking for a better solution, hope we find one soon and will then publish here.
Sorry for the hassle

Hi,
I managed to create an instance of SAP NetWeaver Application Server ABAP & SAP Business Warehouse 7.4 SP8 on SAP HANA 1.0 SP8 on AWS and log on to the virtual machine using Remote Desktop. However, I'm not able to log on to SAP with users DEVELOPER or BWDEVELOPER using the same master password I used when I created the instance (and to log on into the OS).
I terminated the instance and created new ones many times already but I'm still having the same issue.
Am I supposed to use a different password for these users?
Best regards,
Marco Sousa

Hi Marco,
when saying you cannot logon what's the error message?
On OS level, you cannot logon via password but only via ssh-key (you receive the pem file when you create the instance). Using the SSH-Key you should then be able to logon as root on OS.
Additionally you might try to logon as DDIC or SAP* user - but DEVELOPER should work fine (but you might give DDIC or SAP* a try).
Cheers,
Jasmin
Hi Jasmin,
I'm a bit of a newbie so please bear with me .
I'm able to log on to the front end using Windows Remote Desktop. However I'm not able to log on to SAP itself, using SAP GUI for example. The master password (the same I used to log on to the system) is not working for the SAP users.
Additionally, when I activated the instance to take some screenshots about this issue, another issue arises. I'm now getting a connection error in SAP GUI.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Best regards,
Marco Sousa
Hi Marco,
let me try to understand. You can logon via Remote Desktop but from there on, you cannot logon via SAPGui to the system, correct?
Or did you try to logon using your local SAPGui? If yes, please make sure not to hit a firewall (maybe the ports are blocked, either because they are not configured on the CAL in one of the instanciation steps or they are blocked by your company network rules).
The error message indicates that the ABAP server is not running. The exact reason why is hard to guess, but let me glimps into my crystal ball 🙂 We had such kind of issues once the overall size of the AWS instance was not "large enough" - but if you used all recommendations (once you instanciated the server on AWS) everything should be fine. But I assume that this might just be a temporary glitch - as you said "another issue arises", so I guess that was not the case last time.
Did you try to logon on OS level as mentioned above, i.e. using the SSH Key?
Cheers,
Jasmin
Hi Jasmin,
let me try to understand. You can logon via Remote Desktop but from there on, you cannot logon via SAPGui to the system, correct?
That's correct. When I tried to log on via SAPGui on the frontend none of the SAP users accepted my master password.
Since my last reply, I managed to create a new instance and I finally managed to log on to SAP using my master password.
Though, I'm afraid if I suspend the instance I'll get the "wsaewouldblock" error after activating it again. Let's hope for the best
Thank you very much and best regards!

Greetings Fellow BWers:
Got the cloud-based ABAP trial (running on SAP ASE) propped up and connected and loving it. Because I am running through some scenarios on the BI (BusinessObjects) side, I need to update the "Allow External Access" property of one or more sample Bex queries, Problem is: I cannot find them.
I am looking in the provided eclipse-based "SAP Dev Tools for Eclipse" under the pre-configured project for the bwdeveloper user, availalble on the remote desktop. Documentation says a BW Modeling project should have three folders: Back End Favorites, Favorites and InfoProvider. I see only Favorites.
I have installed the minisap technical licenses per the instructions on getting started (page 4) thinking that was the problem. I have also tried creating a new BW Modeling project, but it is empty.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I am noticing something about the new, super cool trial edition of SAP AS ABAP 7.4 trials available as virtual appliances via the cloud: They aren't publicly accessible like their SAP HANA counterparts are.
By publically accessible, I mean you cannot connect to them via public IP, e.g. configure them as an OLAP connection in the SAP BI (BusinessObjects) Platform. Looks like you pretty much have to remote into them and do your stuff all locally.
Can anyone confirm this? It would be extremely beneficial to have them publically accessible as SAP HANA is, since BI activity for BW now extends to the entire BI suite.
Thanks!

Is there a way to download the server by now? I don't want to use AWS, as it requires a credit card. I just want to install a server on my own PC and start developing. When I started with ABAP developments a few years ago some collegues of mine had a server running on their own laptop, but when I search how to do this, I only find this strange cloud servers that are costly and dont work when you dont have internet.

Tim

error when I try to create both
SAP NetWeaver AS ABAP and SAP BW 7.40 SP08 on SAP ASE [developer edition]
and
SAP NetWeaver Application Server ABAP & SAP Business Warehouse 7.4 SP8 on SAP HANA
Any problems on the CAL site ?
Hi,
The newest version is much faster at activating - 10 mins or thereabouts.
Whilst on the topic, is there much difference if we activate via SAP CAL or via Amazon? Both seem to work.

Mike

Hi Ventsislav,
Thanks, but I think you misunderstood my question: I'm talking about activating, not deploying.
I can start and stop my instance from the SAP CAL portal or from the AWS console. Is there a difference?
For me it's better to do it via AWS, because I need to log in there anyway to start my VPN server. I also don't need the SAP Frontend instance so it's an extra step (and small cost) to have SAP CAL start it up only for me to shut it down via AWS 10 minutes later.

Mike
hi all,
2ndly i tried creating instances for ASE version, and I am getting error :

Hello,
I note the newer AS ABAP 7.4 SP8 on ASE is available. Currently this is only in the US region, could it be made available in EU(Ireland)? I have my VPC there and having to deal with two is a bit of a pain.
Also, I see it consists of two machines, m1.medium and m3.large. Am I correct in assuming this is a BW and ABAP system? If so, can I delete the BW as I am only really interested in the ABAP stack?
Thanks & regards,
Mike

Hello Ronaldo,
as I'm working on a different topic for a while now, I'm not up-to-date anymore with the ABAP trial systems. I know my colleagues are also working on a new on-premise trial, but I don't know any details. I'd suggest to post a message in the ABAP on HANA reference space. They might know, what the new timelines are.
Best regards,
Christopher
Hi Manfred,
Eagerly waiting for this . Couple of questions.
> So the stand alone version of ABAP 7.4 will have MaxDB as the database?
> Is there any chance that a HANA version will be made available (I know HANA requires certified hardware to run; but for test purpose such hardware may not be required or may be this is just not feasible ). Its just that the cloud version is costly for some people.
Thanks
Rajvansh
Hi Rajvansh
Just working on it. You can expect the installation version for the ABAP on ASE SP8 Developer Edition that we have released some weeks ago for Cloud Appliance Library. So it is ASE based, not MaxDB based. We had some discussion with the colleagues on a comparable MaxDB version, you can let me know if you are interested in it, not completely out of reach.
Manfred
Thanks Manfred .
I was actually referring to ABAP 7.4 on HANA in my post.

Hi Venkat,
please first try to re-create an instance of the ABAP on HANA developer edition and to connect to the remote desktop as described in this video tutorial.
After this is working please follow section 9.2 in the user guide to set up local developement tools and SAP GUI.
Best regards,
Christopher
Dear experts,
assuming I'd like to connect to ABAP on HANA not using the already preconfigured VM via Remote Desktop but with my local eclipse installation, which are the ports I need to open? I found , but this seems a bit of a huge range to me (and I don't know whether the other HANA-tools require other ports)...
Thanks,
Oliver

Hi Oliver,
take a look at the attached solution guide section 9.2 or download it here:
http://scn.sap.com/docs/DOC-58554
In there, you find all the required ports and how to open them (VM tab of your instance in the CAL console).

Christopher
Dear Christopher,
excited after my visit at the developer's garage, I directly set-up my ABAP on HANA. Everything worked like a charm, except the system not being able to resume y'day.
However, for a poor guy like me doing this as a hobby it's still comparatively expensive. Thus, I thought about using ABAP on a normal DB as my default development environment and then resume the expensive HANA-Box only when I develop stored procedures - and transport my developments between the systems.
However, I just recognized that ABAP on MaxDB is on SP02 (woooot? We're even on SP7 in our company). Are there any plans to provide an SP08-version on MaxDB / ASE?
Cheers,
Oliver

Hi Oliver,
as Uwe already stated we plan to offer a new ABAP on ASE appliance in 2015, which runs in a much smaller VM (-> much cheaper). Second step would be to make this appliance available for download so you could run it locally in a small VM on your laptop. I can't specify any release dates yet, but these are the plans and my colleagues are already working on step 1.
Best regards,
Christopher
Hi Christopher,
I recall those plans (I was indeed pestering you for a long time that evening before TechEd), but I forgot about the first step to make ABAP on ASE available as virtual appliance.
So this also means that there will not be any updated version of ABAP on another DBMS earlier, I guess (which is understandable).
Looking forward to both the versions!
Oliver
Hi Oliver
So keep pestering us always good to see real people behind such requests. Given the fact that we have just released the update on the ABAP on Hana trial (Cloud only) it is quite unlikely that we can be out with major updates before the projected ABAP on ASE will be made available. One more question from my side, as you mention other DBMSs: do you have a particular DBMS in mind you would like to see?
Manfred
Hello Manfred,
I am quite happy with MaxDB, but am not too particular.
Like Oliver, I would prefer a local version, size is not an issue. I also have MaxDB and HANA instances in the cloud, and as the MaxDB is far cheaper to run that's the one I use most. But of course I would prefer to pay even less and run it on my laptop.
Regards,
Mike
Dear Experts,
I receive error message during connection to A4H from either Eclipse or SAP Logon. As I understood from installation guide I did't suppose to configure anything else in the remote session?

I am trying to renew the license prior to expiry (the current license is still valid for a few more days). I have received a new license and when I attempt to install it in SLICENSE I get the following message:
This system's system number is "000000000312313868", but there is a license key for system number "000000000312358402" in the license key file.
In addition to the option 'Install License' there is an option 'Delete License', but I do not want to screw up so I would appreicate advice what is the right way to proceed to update the license prior to expiry. Thanks.

Hi,
I'm having trouble using ADT (Luna) on a fresh NW 7.4 ABAP MaxDB instance. The instance is up and running and I have no problem connecting to it over SAPGui. I have been able to install Eclipse Luna and add all the software from SAP Development Tools for Eclipse - Luna Software Repository. I have created an ABAP Project in ADT and successfully connected to the ABAP AS. I can browse the structure of the DEVELOPER's $TMP package and I can use the "Open with SAP GUI" option on the context menu in the project explorer. However, when I try to just Open the object (in this case, a class), I get a "Problem Occurred" popup with the error "Widget is disposed".
I am not a Java programmer and in my searching I haven't found anything relevant to ADT for this message. Can anyone give me any ideas as to where to look?
Thanks,
Andrew

Hi Christopher,
Thanks very much. I have installed Kepler and that works fine. This unfortunately is one of the dangers of trying to drag ABAPers into the modern age: if it doesn't work straight away, we're stumped!
Is there somewhere I can keep an eye on in SCN that will let me know when these sort of things get updated/fixed.
Thanks again,
Andrew
Hi Andrew,
unfortunately, the only place where you could get this information (related to ADT) is the SCN space of ADT. But I can't find any related posts yet. At least I know that my IDE colleagues are working with high pressure to fix the Luna package.

Christopher
Hello Experts
I read the different questions and answers and i was able to find a close answer to my basic question which is basically what is the minimum instance on AWS i should set to run the AS ABAP incl. BW 7.4 SP5 on SAP HANA SP7 developer edition?
I read at one point that the minimum required was a m2.4xlarge but i cannot find that option anymore, maybe they have changed the options now. So i think my question may still be valid.
So what will be the equivalent now to be able to run the developer edition? Is one instance enough for being able to use the SAP application and have some initial contact with Abap for Hana?
Thanks for your help
Francisco

Hi Francisco,
if you use CAL to create your instance, it'll propose a suitable instance size for you (minimum). So you don't have to worry about this, if you accept the recommended default size. As the EC2 instance types change from time to time you find a description of the previous generation here.

Given that the BEx Analyzer has been disabled due to licensing issues I am wondering: how it is possible to build a planning application on this system?
As far as I understand the WAD requires a Java stack, right?
And a Java stack is not part of this package, right?
Also, planning in the GUI is not possible anymore (like it was in BPS), right?
I am especially wondering about planning with manual input.
You must be a registered user to add a comment. If you've already registered, sign in. Otherwise, register and sign in.
We have a BW 7.4 on MaxDB trial solution that comes with J2EE stack, see the "fourth" entry named BW 7.4 SP2 on SAP MaxDB 7.9*
[90d Trial Edition] on http://scn.sap.com/docs/DOC-41566
I hope this helps
Manfred
Thanks for your answer Manfred, but I am referring to the 'BW on HANA' ( AS ABAP incl. BW 7.4 SP5 on SAP HANA SP7
[Developer Edition] ) package.
As you might/probably know BW contains functionalities for building planning scenarios called 'Integrated Planning' (IP).
Given that the BEx has been disabled and that the 'BW on HANA' package indicated above seem to not contain a JAVA stack I just do not understand how it is possible to use the 'manual planning' feature. A planning solution without the possibility of manual input is a bit like a car without wheels
Can you suggest something?
In Q4 we are planning a trial version including Design Studio 1.3 which is planning enabled.
In your current setup you can use the embedded BPC features. You can use the input forms within the BPC Admin (http://<server>:<port</sap/bc/ui5_ui5/sap/bpcwebclient/index.html).
For testing you can also use the internal transaction RSRT.

Upcoming Maintenance of License Key System
The License Key request system will be undergoing maintenance from Friday, April 25, 2014 (start 5.00am CEST) to Monday, April 28, 2014 (end 11.59pm CEST). Keys must be requested as per normal procedures, however there will be a delay in processing and receiving the key. However, no emails with license key details will be sent. Please download your requested license keys on SAP Support Portal.
This is great and all, but what about those of us who would like to run the VM locally without incurring amazon charges? Is there an easy place to just download the VM directly and then start it in VMWare or VirtualBox? (Yes, I know you could set it up in VirtualBox and then download that VM with a disk imaging tool, but that seems a very tedious way to do something).
