Spouse life insurance for same sex spouse

We are configuring our health/insurance plans to allow same sex spouse as a dependent/beneficiary/enrollee.  We were advised to create a new subtype for family member called ‘Same Sex Spouse’ rather than just using the existing ‘Spouse’.  The problem we are running into is on our Spouse Life Insurance.  SAP only allows costs to be determined based on the age of either the Employee, the Spouse or the Domestic Partner.  We are not able to choose the new Same Sex Spouse.  Has anyone found a way around this?  How is everyone handling Same Sex Spouses (for legally married spouses).   Are you just using the existing Spouse relationship?  If so, has that caused any issues elsewhere?

Hi,

I'm not sure why you want to use a different subtype. Spouse is not gender specific so it can be used for same sex partner as well (you will get a warning message saying that the gender is the same but it will be possible to save the record and thus have the same functions), and this is the recommended process.

It will make the rest of the configuration much more easier. I actualy believe that it might be discriminatory to have different suptype for same sex spouse, which is probably why SAP did not provide a specific subtype in the the first place.

Best regards

Sarah

Hi Leah,

Can you please make your query more clear....

We are using legal spouse and domestic partner as subtypes in IT0021.

When cost is defined for spouse Life ,  two different cost variants is defined, one for spouse and one for partner.

We didnt had any problems till now....

Thanks & Regards

We have three subtypes in IT0021:  spouse (used for opposite gender spouses), domestic partner (used for domestic partners) and a custom same-sex spouse (used for same gender spouses).  It was recommended by our law dept that we create the new subtype.  Domestic Partner and Same-sex spouse are two different relationships.  Spouse and Same-sex spouse are both legal spouses however the same-sex spouse may have tax implications.  If we use this new custom relationship (subtype) we cannot use it in our cost variant as the relationships available there are set by SAP rather than allowing us to choose our own custom ones.

Thanks,

Leah
