Field Descriptions in Information Steward

Hi,

We are using IS 4.1. When we import a table from a database or SAP ECC, the table / field description is not imported. Also there is no way to edit the description ourselves. We have a workaround though to add annotations to each column. But I'm interested to know how to import the descriptions too along with the table.

Hi Arun,

I guess you want to see these descriptions within the Data Insight section of Information Steward after you have added tables to your Projects.

On the workspace tab, there is in the top right corner a button for changing the columns to be showed within the Table/Field list, please check if the description field is checked there.

When your original database or ECC system had some information in the description field of the table or the field, yes, it should be visible for you. At least on our systems (IS 4.1) this is the case.

Yes, we want to see the descriptions in the Data Insight section. We have this option checked but still no descriptions displayed!

We are on IS 4.1 SP01. I see that you have mentioned IS 4.1. Was this a bug, and fixed in any of the Patches? We need to fix this as this is quite critical and the 'business' is familiar with the descriptions than the field names.

Hello,

we are having the same problem: the description field is not imported when pulling metadata from our staging database. I have checked and confirmed that

• the description is imported and displayed in Information Steward when connecting to ERP directly
• the description is correctly saved in the staging database

Therefore, we assume that the metadata import in Information Steward (when importing Metadata from databases) has a bug.

We applied the patch and now we are on IS 4.1 SP01 Patch 02. Descriptions are displayed now!

IS 4.1 SP01 Patch 02 should solve this.
