Hello Satish,

R/3 4.7 Enterprise is technically linked to the WAS 6.20 ABAP and it's impossible to update the WAS to 6.40 without performing a release upgrade for R/3. This would require you to update R/3 4.7 to mySAP ERP (ECC 5.0).

EP requires WAS 6.40 JAVA. With some restrictions, some components can be combined on one WAS 6.40 ABAP+JAVA. Additionally, some of these existing restrictions that are currently in place will probably be removed in future versions of NetWeaver (04S).

As for question 2, to ensure consistency on application level you are supposed to connect EP and R/3 on application level rather than writing directly to the database.

Even on a WAS 6.40 ABAP+JAVA, writing directly to the ABAP database from the JAVA instance is not allowed and instead you should use the Java Connector (jco) for this. Technically, the ABAP and JAVA world are separated (i.e. by Oracle schema owners) to prevent this from happening.

Walter

Hi Satish,

It only means that EP 6.0 was initially released on WAS 6.20 and that configuration is supported till December 31,2006. However why do you want to install EP on the same system that runs R3 Enterprise.

Cheers,

Hi Satish,

Actually there are two "versions" of Enterprise Portal;

- EP 6.0 (also referred to as EP 6.0 SP2 in many documentation) that runs on WebAS 6.20.

- Netweaver Portal (also called EP 6.0 but officially EP 60_640) that runs on WebAS 6.40.

Although you can still use EP 6.0 (WebAS 6.20); SAP recommends using the Netweaver Portal (WebAS 6.40). Because the portal relies heavy on the WebAS JAVA functionality (for example the UME) it's best to go for Netweaver Portal in case of a new installation.

To get back to your original question, I think you are looking for a method to install an ABAP+JAVA system with R/3 (ABAP) and EP (JAVA) in the same system. Theoretically this seems possible, but in practice I guess it's not. SAP doesn't support it anyway so I think it's no good solution.

Instead, I'd install the ABAP R/3 system on WebAS 6.20 ABAP (possibly also the WebAS 6.20 JAVA if required) and install another JAVA 6.40 instance for Enterprise Portal.

To get back to part 2 of your question, in a ABAP+JAVA system the ABAP and JAVA schemes are separated at database level. You cannot write directly to the ABAP schema from JAVA and the other way around. Instead, use JCO and RFCs for inter-schema communication.

The EP contains standard elements to connect an R/3 backend.

Kind regards,

Walter
