Is Web Dynpro for Java important to learn SAP Portal

Hi,

I need to take the following course :

SAP NetWeaver Portal – Development

But I found a prerequisite for that course which is:

Web Dynpro for Java Basics

https://training.sap.com/v2/course/ja310-web-dynpro-for-java-basics-classroom-092-gb-en/

My question is: is it possible to take the SAP Portal course without taking the Web Dynpro course.. If not then I want to learn Web Dynpro for Java .. so how to start and what applications I need to install on my local machine

Thanks

    Dear Assaf,

that is depending up on your interest. Enterprise Portal having two parts

    1. Administartor

    2. WD JAVA

If you lean WDJAVA in feacture its better for you.

Please look at these document: http://scn.sap.com/thread/1026445

    Hope this helps !!!

You can learn and use WebDynpro Java without Portal.

But if you want to integrate your WebDynpro Java Application with Portal and organise your WebDynpro Java apps into IViews, Pages, Worksets and Roles then you will need to learn Portal as well.

The link that you shared does not mention Portal learning as prerequisite.

You may consider downloading a Sneak Preview CE Server from the Downloads section at the top of this site.

    Hi,

You have to know that Web Dynpro JAVA is an UI technology and Portal is an integration technology. There are alternatives as well coming to WDJ like Web Dynpro ABAP, SAP UI5 etc. But, when you would want to provide role based access to your applications, Portal is the only choice. Offcourse, you have alternative for Portal as well i.e the Netweaver Business Client (NWBC) comes with ECC from EhP5. It all depends on the landscape and how you would want take the UI strategy in your case. Hope this helps.

for that course, you don't have to know too much about wdj.

    why you take that course?

it is not used very often, in most case, you will develop the UI using WDJ.

Portal is the front end for numerous SAP backends.
Its scope is not limited to WebDynpro Java.
