Hello,
I work for a Hitech industry.
We have a software product that customers download through web.
We want to keep track of what software version the customer has and contact them accordingly to provide upgrade to the customers software.
Does anyone worked in such process, what is the best way to track the Material( Product) version ?
I'm sure there should be some standard process that SAP recommends. Appreciate any info on this.

I've worked for a company that sold software, but I don't believe we tracked such information in SAP because notifications about new version were sent to everyone, from what I remember.
There are customer-material info records that would seem a good fit, but they have a different purpose, I think. As already suggested, you could use any existing field that is not used or create a custom one. Could even build a web service that would update SAP when a customer downloads software.
I would not recommend using a text though because it's impossible to run any intelligent reports from the texts.
SAP might have a different solution, but I bet it costs extra.

Ajai, I think I found something - see BP for software providers. Hope this helps.
Hi
I have never worked on a process like this but I have a suggestion for you that if you have only one product in one sale order then you can use VERSION field in sale order header Sales tab.If there are more than one products in same sale order then you can maintain version in any of line item level field or in material master in any text field. What do you say?
Thank$
