how to get the month and year from a DatePicker()

I'm using sap.m.DatePicker() and would like to get the month and the year that have been selected. I'm able to use getVaue() which returns something like "01/17" and getDateValue() which returns something like "Tue Jan 10 00:00:00 EST 2017". I can take these strings and manipulate them to get the values I want, but is there an easier way to get those values directly from the DatePicker().
