Problem logging on with ldap users

Dear SDN,

I am using a sun one ldap with ep.

I have exported all my users from an R/3 system using transaction LDAP (no problem).

I have set my portal to authenticate to this LDAP with read write acess (no problem, all tests pass and I can create users in the LDAP from the portal)

Now the problem. I cannot log into the portal with any of the new users. When I first log on with the uid and pw I am prompted to change the password. When I do this I get the following message

User authentication failed!

Any one have any ideas?
