Equipment as Functional location

Former Member

Hi,

Is it good practice to create one machine as equipment as well as functional location?

What advantage we will get if we create as mentioned above.

Our client requirement is every one or two year, the equipment will be moved from one place to other place within one functional location and user wants to track the history of changes. If we create equipment and change with in one functional location, can we able to get change history?

I am planning to create machine as functional location. By doing this way i can able to fulfill above requirement. Is there is any specific reason why we need to create a machine as equipment instead of functional location?

Let me know your views...

Hi Uma,

The line

'If we create equipment and change within one functional location'

needs clarity.

-     While relocating an equipment, either you are changing the functional location or you are changing the Super.Ord. Equipment.

-     In your case because you are saying 'within one Functional Location', it is assumed that you are to change the Super.Ord Equipment.

If it is so, in this case too, you will be able to track the movement of the equipment.

      (IE02-->Extras-->Usage List)

I hope you've understood that 'Sub-functional location would replace the Supr.Ord Equipment in the above explanation, in certain set-ups

Hi Jogeswara,

Thanks for your mail. Super ordinate equipment concept will not work for our case. May be i will explain the scenario in detail.

In my client place in two locations, production lines installed and in in location 10 equipment installed. If machine is old or if company sells some machines, then user will shift the existing machine with in same location and user wants to know the change history of each equipment. So, for the above requirement, whether we need to create functional location for each equipment? What is the best way.

Hi Uma,

What I understood from your above post -

Scenario is -

Plant P1 -->

Location -1 --> (I will say it as Functional Location)

                                           Machine - 1

                                           Machine - 2

Location - 2 --> (I will say it as Functional Location)

                                           Machine - 3

                                           Machine - 4

Workshop/Store --> (I will say it as Functional Location)

                                           Machine - 5

                                           Machine - 6  (Standby Equipments)

Solution Proposal -

I am suggesting you should go for creation of equipment instead functional location for following reason as 'Your location (Production line not changing but you machine moving from workshop/store to Location 1 and Location -1 to Location -2.

The scenario will execute like this - Machine -1 of the location having status INST installed on location -1 got old and need to replace we will dismantle/remove the machine - 1 from location -1 and make the status as INACTIVE (If you send for repairing and will be back in operation after some time) and Deletion flag set (If you are permanently scrapping the equipment).

In this case we will move the Machine-5 (Having status INST on Workshop functional Location) from workshop to location- 1.

Like this we can move the equipments/machines in different location.

SAP is tracking all this movement as 'Usage life Period' and can be seen from History of the equipment. You can check this using Extras --> Usage List from menu bar.

Usage list will give the history of that equipment - Valid from, valid to, Installed FL/Superior equipment, Technical identification no. etc details.

In case if you are maintaining number of stand by equipments for same operational equipment you may you the field - Manufacture serial number to distinguish the same.

Though this 'Usage List' functionality available in Functional Location (Structures --> Usage Periods) but it will give the usage period of the equipment only which installed on it but does not give the usage period the Functional Location.

I hope this will help you.

Thank You.

Hi Uma,

To my understanding you have 2 Main Fucntional Location, under each there are 10 slots for equipments.

Now you make 10 sub-functional locations under each Main F/L with sutiable names.

Place your equipments under these Sub- F/Ls.

At any given point of time few Sub-F/Ls may be without any equipment.

The idea of maintaining another F/L for Spares by Rahul, you can implement, by creating a 3rd F/L parallel to Main F/Ls or as 11th Sub-F/L in each Prodn Line. (In case any such requirement of maintaining spare equipments is there)

In any case there is no problem in getting the required Usage List.

Hi Rao,

Our client requirement is asking in the same way, what you have mentioned below,

"Now you make 10 sub-functional locations under each Main F/L with sutiable names.

Place your equipments under these Sub- F/Ls."

In order to track the changes, within one functional location, is this is best way? Kindly throw some light on this...

Generally Functional Location Hierarchy would be...

Plant - Production Area / Line - Sub Production Area - Drill down to next level if Sub Production Area is large to track the equipment movement

Under the last level of Functional Location hierarchy, equipment will be assigned.

So you can create N no. of levels in Functional location hierarchy to accommodate easy tracking of equipment movement & other PM related information.

Hi Uma,

Why not?

Pl see the 2 images below made for you.

-Image1: How the Structure looks like (Only few machines shown)

-Image 2 shows the Machine movement (through IE02->Extras->Usage List)

Hope this helps

Equipment and / or functional location will be created to track the maintenance & cost history.

So its not required to create the same machine as Equipment as well as Functional location. Instead, you can create sub functional location under main functional location.
