Design Studio for iPad - not in Mobile BI App?

Hi all,

I have created a Design Studio application, added it to the 'Mobile' and 'MobileDesigned' and refreshed the mobile BI app only to find out that the Design Studio document is not appearing there. I can see and run my Webi reports without any problem.

Do Design Studio reports not appear in the Mobile BI App? Or is there something wrong with my configuration?

I can execute the application I created in Design Studio simply by clicking the URL but I was hoping there would be a more sophisticated way of using Design Studio apps.

I wonder how other people distribute their Design Studio reports to iPad users?

Thanks for your suggestions,

Jan.

Hi Jan,

Are you using BI4 SP5 or higher on the platform?  Have you downloaded the latest Mobile BI release from iTunes store?

If you are on these releases and have followed the steps listed here http://scn.sap.com/docs/DOC-34364 then I would submit a support note

Hi Tammy, thanks for your quick response.

I initially had not selected target device iPad - but I have now created another application which does have target device iPad, as per your document. Unfortunately this did not make a difference.

When I go to CMC it shows me I am running 14.0.5 - which translates to 'BI4 SP5' I believe?

My Design Studio version is Release 1.0 SP2 (Version: 10.2.0) - (Eagerly anticipating the release of version 1.1 )

The mobile BI app on my iPad is 4.4.28.18.

I do not have access to the mobile server - should I ask basis to check the version of the SAP BI Mobile server software?

I did see one difference between my Webi apps and my Design Studio apps. When I go to the 'categories' in the BI launch pad, the number of instances is empty for Design Studio apps, where it has a value ('0') for the Webi apps. Not sure if that is relevant though. I have added a screenshot, perhaps that is helpful.

If you have any ideas of what I can try that would be great, otherwise I'll send it of to our support team and they can create a customer message if necessary.

Thanks!

Jan.

On the surface this should work

As for the Mobile Server, that is part of the Mobile BI installation - hopefully that is BI4.4 on the server side as well.  Yes, I would check that too.

You could also take a look at note 1773751

If all these check out then yes I would submit a SAP support ticket.

Regards,

Tammy

Thanks Tammy, I will check what version the Mobile BI installation is and ask basis to further investigate. If necessary I will log a ticket. I will update this post as I go along....

Hi Jan,

Can you confirm with your administrator whether the Design Studio BIP Add-On was installed (successfully)?

The installation file can be found on the SMP in the Design Studio area.

Another guess would be your permissions to the Design Studio files?

Hi Cobus,

Thanks, I had not thought of the BIP Add-on yet. I have passed the information on to our basis team - assuming this is something that needs to be installed on the server side, not on the client side? Or is there any way I could tell if it is installed just by looking at the Design Studio client installation or CMC? I can see there are a lot of plug-ins installed on my client installation - about 12 pages of them! If I can verify this on the client side, do you know the exact name of the BIP add-on as it appears in the 'installation details' (help > about)?

Regarding Permissions  - I have no problems opening the applications from the BI launch pad using my desktop. I can also see and run the Webi applications on my iPad - the Webi files are are sitting in the same folder. I have full control on the folder and all files in the folder.

So I don't think it is authorisation related - unless there is a specific authorisation setting for Design Studio on iPad. Hopefully basis will come back with some more about the BIP add-on.

Thanks for your answer!

Jan,

The Design Studio BIP Add-On is a separate install for server side.

According the the Design Studio Administrator Document the Analysis Application Service is installed on the BI server with this Add-On.  The detail of this is:

  1. Analysis Application Web Components
    • This feature makes it possible to display analysis applications in the BI launch pad, and use OpenDocument links in order to send direct links of analysis applications to other recipients. It also allows communication between the design tool and the BI platform in order to save and launch analysis applications
  2. Analysis Application Service
    • This feature includes the Analysis Application Service running in the Adaptive Processing Server. The Analysis Application Service makes it possible to execute analysis applications.
  3. Analysis Application support for Mobile Services
    • This feature adds mobile support to analysis applications, integrating analysis applications into SAP BusinessObjects Mobile. It allows application users to access analysis applications on mobile devices, such as the iPad.

Thanks again Cobus.

The basis team have (re-)installed the plug-in but still no luck....

I have looked for those three services you mention, but cannot find them.

Should they be visible from CMC?

All I can see is the following (under 'Servers > Analysis Services':

- AdaptiveProcessingServer with description "Adaptive Processing Server"

- AdaptiveProcessingServer with description "Multi Dimensional Analysis"

Does that mean that Analysis Application Web Components, Analysis Application Service and Analysis Application support for Mobile Services are all missing? When I add a server, I can select the "Analysis Application Service" but not the other two.

I am not sure what to do. Should I just ask basis to add the "Analysis Application Service" .

The basis team also had another observation. In the mobi.properties file there is usually the following entry:

default.doctype=webi,crystal report.

Should this be added and should there be a value for Design Studio applications as well?

Any guidance greatly appreciated, we are a bit stuck as we believe we have done all steps as described in the guide....

Thanks!

Jan.

Hi,

Could you confirm the mobile server version?

Jan,

I don't think you need to change anything in the mobi.properties file.

You need to add at least the Analysis Application Service - I would suggest a new instance (copy) of the current APS.  We don't have the other two services (Web Components, Mobile Services) in our environment and I'm able to browse Design Studio apps just fine.

Is your BOBJ running on a Windows server?  Maybe your Basis consultant can try installing the Add-On using the 'Run as administrator' option.

There are some new developments - a bit of a breakthrough.

One of my colleagues tested it with their iPad, and it works!

Now they have an iPad 2 where I have an iPad 1.

Would that explain why it does not work for me? I really can't think of anything else (we are using the same credentials).

I haven't seen this mentioned in the documentation though, and Webi applications do work on iPad 1.....

Any thoughts, anyone?

Hi Jan,

Answer to your question is analysis apps are not supported on IPAD1 with mobile app version 4.4.27 or higher.

Please Download Feature Compatibility Matrix "44x_mobiOS_featcomp_en" from http://help.sap.com/bomobileios and refer to page #17 which clearly states "2. Analysis applications are supported only on iPad 2 and iPad 3 (not supported on iPad 1)".

Hope this answered your question.

Thanks

Thanks Mallik,

I had missed that somehow.

I'd better start saving for an upgrade then
