In addition i want shortly describe my opinion about your questions.
1) CRM Webchannel is a separate module. It is working on JAVA Stack of SAP CRM Installation. It is closely integrated with Sales, Service and Marketing, but this module is not using Middleware Mechanism. Web channel usually used like some entering form for transaction or personal place for customer. After finishing external business processes information is going in CRM system (Orders, Quotations, Complaints etc). Or customer can change personal information, see his point balance (in Loyalty scenario) or some transaction status (for example delivery date of sales order) ans so on...
2) Java programming is must if you are going to take part in development. Web-services are quite usual thing to use in integration scenarios. Ypu should also be aware about PI/XI.
Hope it helps!
